Cool Day one at the Camphor Laurel Initiative Group.

    Hello fellow woodies,
It was day one at the Camphor Laurel Initiative Group in Cooroy in cold and windy Queensland. I was warmly welcomed by the club President and the other friendly members.
There were home made cakes and bickies over a hot cuppa for morning tea followed by the setting up of the new equipment the group had purchased for toy making.
A desk and office chair was provided with an as new scroll saw, a new bobbin sander, a new band saw, a new bench sander, a new wheel cutter and a new dremel tool. With more equipment to come.
Wow, what a start to a new club.
In the four hours I was there I made the club about $60 worth of toys.
As part of the membership 100 hours of work per year must be donated to the club. No problem.
There are 4 x 44 gal drums full of off cuts for toy making and racks of timber put aside especially for small projects.
I give my first toy making class on Thursday.
It's nice to be in a club where you're warmly welcomed and your talent is appreciated.

Yes I agree, There are a few mobile dust extractors around the shed , I'll get one rigged up asap.
My setup is too close to the painting and the camphor laurel is overwhelming sometimes.

Seems to be lots of dust extractors in the shed. I can count at least 7 of them.
Nice cosy little work area you have.

I have just gone back and looked at your post about the old club as I hadn't kept up with this thread. It's a shame when some people with very strong opinions or discrimination's can destroy a club when most people are there for enjoyment and learning.
I hope this one provides all you are after and everyone works together harmoniously.

    Default Working with Camphor Laurel

    Hi fellow woodworkers,

I'm posting a few pics of recent woodwork I've created at the Camphor Laurel Group in Cooroy Qld.
The C.L.G. is an N.P.O. and requires money to support it's self. Besides selling timber ( Camphor Laurel ) members are required to donate 100 hours a year to the club by volunteering their time to help on projects or make items for sale. I've been volunteering at the C.L.G. for approx 2 months now and I've clocked up 75 hours already and made $100's of dollars worth of toys that are selling well in the workshops gallery and at the Cooroy Library Art Gallery.
I'm working with a dedicated team who understand the value of community service and the rewards that follow. The members have warmly welcomed me into the group.
The C.L.G. bought me this small bench top 1 inch belt and disk sander from Hobby Tools Australia - Dremel Tools, Proxxon Tools, Photo Etch Tools, Paasche Airbrushes (on special for $179 at the moment ). A great tool for toy makers.
I'll now press them for a small bench top drill press and I'll be fully set up at my work station. I'll post a pic of the work area soon.

20160725_185133.jpg A small reindeer. I've made a heap of these for the C.L.G. along with other wooden Christmas decorations.
20160725_185206.jpg A smaller rabbit ready for painting. The arms are articulated.

20160726_162258.jpg20160726_162311.jpg20160729_111512.jpg This little dashound was a request. I made 2. They are made from rejected camphor laurel rolling pins I found in the rubbish bins at the C.L.G. The head is made from the handle and part of the roller of the rolling pin.

20160726_162422.jpg To display my wifes 175 collectable Barbie dolls requires two large display cases and a lot of doll stands. And that's what these are, Barbie Doll Stands. I've made about 40 so far.

Well that's it for another month.
I hope all your projects are a success and you are keeping well and in good spirits.
    Bye for now,
    The Cooroy Toymaker.

A great collection of different works there. It looks like you have had a new lease of life and producing items completely different to your past toys.
I have been considering one of those sanders for quite some time. What is your opinion of it?

Treecycle and Cooroy Toymaker, I have also been eyeing off those small 1" sanders and I finally bought one via the net from Melbourne Tools several days ago. I am very pleased with it to date and also took it into our Mens Shed (T.O.Y.S at Clarence Park SA) this morning where it was admired by all (so much so that I have had to order another for one of my mates). The website for these is as follows https://vod.ebay.com.au/vod/FetchOrd...=1308154807014 ./ The type I ordered is called the Maxorbit and it was $145-95 and [postage free, which I considered to be pretty good). I think the sander, both belt and disk, will be just the thing for some of the small pieces that we have to produce at times.

Thanks Superfoot. Unfortunately your link doesn't work to have a look at it.
Are you able to provide another link?

It's okay, I found the item

I really like everything you've made there.
But being me I can't go past the Dashound!

    Superfoot.
Ordered mine last night. That is a very good price against the one that Cooroy Toymaker got, which went up another $20 last night on Ebay. Don't know if there is any difference in quality that warrents the price difference, but for what I will be using it for I don't think I will notice.
I also got some spare belts of different grits off another seller while I was at it. They worked out to about $1 each with free shipping.

Following my recent comments, I took the new sander in to our Mens Shed last Tuesday and everyone was very impressed. So much so that My mate Tony asked me to order one for him (he says he's hopeless at using the computer). Well I ordered it that afternoon and it arrived Friday morning. Very fast service by Australia Post. Then on Thursday our Co-ordinator asked me to order one for the Shed, so I've got another one on the way. I think they said that there's only about 4 sanders left now. I ordered some belts from o'seas and also some 125mm discs from Sydney. Have asked the Sydney supplier if he can also supply the stick-on disc for the metal sander disc. I also had a look back at previous posts from the Cooroy Toymaker and it looks as though he was using a similar machine at his old shed. The sander that Ryobi used to sell also seems to be the same, just rebadged with the Ryobi name.

Looks like you might have got the last one as they are now out of stock.
I am hoping mine will arrive tomorrow, but have to wait until my birthday before I can play with it.
Is the 5" disc the self adhesive type? The Sandpaper Man has the velcro converter for just under $6 if you don't have luck elsewhere.

    Treecycle,
The 5" disc is self-adhesive but am going to pick up a Velcro converter disc tomorrow from Adelaide Tools. Incidentally, there is a second-hand Ryobi 1" belt sander (just a rebadged version of the one you've ordered) on Ebay with the auction finishing tomorrow I think. This is the link Ryobi Mini Belt AND Disk Sander | eBay If anyone's interested you'll need to get a friend in Melbourne to pay for it and then send it on. Just a thought, as these don't seem to come on the market very often.
