The Cooroy Camphor Laurel Woodworkers at The Cooroy Fusion Festival 2017
Hello again,
Here are a few photos of our activities at the Cooroy Fusion Festival. The day started out with rain but cleared up by 8.00 am. It was a very successful day. We sold nearly 200 sausages @$2.00 each as well as soft drinks.
The woodwork shop sold well over $3,000 worth of stock. ( that line is for any Cooroora Woodworkers Club Members reading this )
There was also good timber sales through out the day. We also received five orders for jobs.
The Simmental Cattle were a big hit as usual. The camel rides did well but were located further into the main festival area. The chain saw demonstration kept visitors enthralled through out the day. My toy stall sales made it worth while setting up. Although, up until the last 5 minutes, I was ready to take up knitting instead.
Peter the bee man was kept busy all day with inquiries about his native bees and bee hotels. He was very popular. It reflects the public's concern for the world wide bee population decrease.
A big thanks you to the too few volunteers who gave up their time to help out during the day and on Wednesday with the general cleanup of the workshops. A couple of our regular volunteers were on sick leave and were sorely missed on the day.
Everything went smoothly on the day but more relief volunteers to help in the shop and on the sausage sizzle would have made it a lot less tiring on those who stuck it out all day. From set up to pack up makes for a long day when you are past retirement age.
And so to the pics.

Another week closes and another week begins. So far this week I've had requests for a polar bear, a mouse, a horse, a cow, a goat and a sheep. I wonder what other unusual requests I'll get this week?

You're certainly a busy man. Clubs only survive with a core group of people like you so keep up the good work.

Thanks for the support Dallas. Here is a tug boat I posted on Page 15 , some may have missed it on the skip to page 16. It turned out quite well , I think.

Once again you tend to shame some of us with your output and the quality of your work. Love those timbers. Nothing like that in SA. Keep up the great work.

Tanks, Tugs, swords, saws and spoons.
Hello Fellow Woodworkers,
This week I've ventured into the military vehicle scene with a couple of robust toy tanks. Tug boats. A couple of simple swords. A couple of more detailed knives and a flash back to a couple of old dioramas that were broken and needed some TLC.

20170525_152235.jpg
20170525_152318.jpgI used two small blocks of wood off cuts. With this larger larger 8 wheeler tank I used a 40mm forstner bit to drill out the wheel recess to about the depth of the wheel then drilled the axle holes. It worked quite well. I will use this technique a lot more in future.

Untitled.jpg
Hi Dallas,
Thank you for your interest and thank you for your question.
Yes , the blade is curved front and back.
Using a larger piece of stock I used almost the full depth of a small band saw to cut out the inside curved face.
Then stepped it back a bit to cut out the curved back and there it was.
A little sanding on the end of the belt sander to round off the bottom and ends and it was finished.
I drilled a hole in the thicker part of the blade to inset the dowel.
I hope that helps.
regards

Deers, Orcas and construction vehicles.
Hello again fellow woodies
This week has been busy in house in the club with the new extension being added and a general tidy up of the whole work shop at the Cooroy Camphor Laurel Woodworkers Group.
I'll post pics next week when the extension is finished and we are moving the new work benches in.
This week I've been assisting a new member ( Mark - a retired D.I. from England ) with making toys for children who have been victims of violence.
He has turned a few spinning tops and made 20 cars for them.
He also made a couple of deer in the fashion of the crazy looking cows. His wife likes deer. So he has had a bit of practice on my tools and coming along very nicely.
An Apprentice Toy Maker , my first one.
So to the pics this week.

20170623_170738.jpg Second attempt. It only took an hour to make, you should have a go
20170622_114339.jpg Here are Marks 2 reindeer's. He came up with the ideas and I helped a little. Not to bad at all.
Have a good weekend
Bye for now.

Truly wonderful work. Are you using Arukaria on the dolphins? I remember mum and dad taking me to Cooroy as a young fella to visit my friend Pam James.

Thank you for your interest Steve. I don't use fancy finishes on my work. As a pensioner I can't afford the fancy products. I usually paint the toys with a sanding sealer, sand them back with very fine sand paper and then rub in a little tung oil. That is how I'll finish the Killer whales. In the Cooroy Camphour Laurel workshops we have a dedicated painter who paints the toys with 3 coats of varnish.

Apologies for the confusion mate. I explained myself poorly - araucaria (I also misspelled it so didn't help matters) is the family of trees known as Hoop pine or Bunya pine etc. but now you've mentioned Camphour Laurel I think I have my answer
.... stupidly I didn't read the name of your club because I went straight to your work which again, is an honest joy to see.Steve
