Couple of toy helicopters
Here are a couple of helicopters I made over the last couple of weeks. I got the idea to make them from my good friend Arthur (artme) who was making a couple himself for his grandsons who were coming up for a visit. Anway, Arthur finished his and they turned out very nice. Came over the other day and showed me his two lovely grandsons and they were proudly showing off their new toys their Grandad had made for them.
Unfortunately I didn't take any pics of Arthurs helicopters and as far as I know, neither did Arthur.
Kids being kids, they couldn't wait for Arthur to paint their helicopters so they took delivery of them in the raw timber which in fact looked good.. I didn't copy Arthur's plan but took a few ideas from pictures I saw on the internet. so without further ado, here they are..
I had thought of doing a WIP but this was as far as i got with that. first pic shows one of the helicopters in the making.

Next couple of pics show that particular one finished. I attempted to put a pilot in the seat of this one. unfortunately he hasn't got any arms..

the last pic is of a totally different design..

Some dimensions of the helicopters.. length is 32cm for the green one and 37cm for the red one. Height of the red one is 20cm and the green one is 14cm. I tried to make the green one with a sort of a military look and it is actually painted green with splashes of black to give the appearance of camouflage, it worked pretty well I think. Both cockpits (if thats what they call them in helicopters) are 3 X 19mm Pine laminated together.
The green one was simple to make with the tail piece incorporated into the cockpit sandwiched between the two outer layers of the cockpit and then continued in one piece and shaped into the tailpiece. The red helicopter is made in the same manner for the cockpit being 3 pieces of 19mm Pine laminated together to create the width.(57mm)
The tail on the red one is a separate piece and glued and screwed into place.
It would have been easy to do it the same way as the green one but this was the first one I made and didn't think of doing it that way until it was past the point of no return.
They were fun and interesting and easy to make.Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

Thanks guys, you can see in the first picture the simplicity of the construction, essentially the whole thing is make up of 3 pieces of timber sandwiched together. Just to correct my earlier mention of the timber thickness I used, the centre piece of timber is actually 25mm and not 19mm as originally stated, thus the width of the helicopters are 63mm. You could of course indeed use 19mm or any other thickness for that matter.
Reality is no background music.

Having seen these in the flesh I can tell you how good they are!!
I did get to photograph the two I made and will post the pics shortly.
Must thank the Mayor of Munruben for his helpful suggestions when I made the two helicopters. Between us the design turned out pretty well.
