Dog Whirlygig
Just a bit of nonsense to go on a post up near the back fence to entertain the grandkids (and me, Hehehehe!) when they are here.
I have only just finished the construction so that means that I have yet to apply some waterproofing epoxy stuff and to paint it all fancy but this vid shows that it works ...

I shall show the final painted version when that is all done but rain is forecast for the next week or so here so I don't anticipate doing much with it for a week or so.
Nonetheless, "it works, Grommit! It works! "

Hope you are high, safe & dry, Charleville.

Hi Folks;
Many thanks for your encouraging comments.
I have finally gotten around to finish the whirlyjig and it now sits high in my back yard in a spot amongst the trees, such that my grandkids will happen upon it by surprise when they next visit.
I was in no particular hurry to finish it as I have had other projects under way. In any case, it always pays to let paint harden well after it dries so the whirlyjig has been resting in the workshop and sometimes basking in the sun to help with the paint hardening process. I gave all risky areas, in terms of weather damage, a couple of coats of a two part epoxy wood preservative before painting so hopefully there will be a few years of life in the thing.
After painting, this is how he (she?) turned out...

I just happened to have a spare high post amongst my trees where a long dead bug zapper had spent many years. So, yesterday, down came the bug zapper and its bracket and up went the dog ...

Well, wouldn't you believe it? After a couple of weeks of good windy weather, the weather changed into the sort of conditions that advertising agencies like to photograph new power boats in. ie no wind at all. ( Which, in boating terms, means that even the most unstable bucket of a hull will glide along magnificently and majestically on still seas.) No good for filming whirlyjigs though.
However, all was not lost. At lunch time today, we got a few gusts of wind ahead of a bit of rain and just enough to prove that the dog will wag its tail as desired...

Now, where are those grandkids?

question
Did you use a thrust washer between the nose and the block? If you did, what did you use?
Great looking. Thanks for sharing with us.

Yes - I used a couple of stainless steel washers between the nose and an aluminium surface on the main body as shown below ...

The shaft is a thin aluminium tube supported with a journal bearing at each end. The journal bearings are just a couple of ferruled saddles as shown below. These are available from chandleries and are used to tie thin ropes to on boats. I needed to drill out the eye just a tiny bit to ensure free movement of the shaft.

A great project....love it!
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.
