I very much like it. Looks like a nice solid one that a young bloke could use without it being too delicate. I've already added it to my collection of projects.

Thanks Mick. It sure is a solid beast so far. I liked it too. I will get back and do some more on it tomorrow and post some more pics. I changed the rear dowel to 1/2" because that is what I had and I made the front dowel and front axle 7/8" (22mm) because the wife's broom (old one that is) is that size.

Progress pics on the truck.

The drawings are enough to do the job but you have to be creative with drawing at times, especially with the cab towards the top. I moved the crank for the tipper back behind the cab. The drawings show the cord for the tipper running up through the cab but this would make it hard to replace if broken I thought.

I am going to paint the chassis black before assembly. The steering wheel is small and drawn that way but I wish I had made it bigger. I used a simple block of wood for the seat and I will secure the steering column to it to increase its strength.

You can see I have recycled some old plywood. The hood 1/4" material will also be plywood. I just glued everything together will clamps but I will use fasteners here and there. I think the plywood axle tube in the rear is the weakest part but the chassis reinforces it. You could bore a hole long 1" hole through solid timber I guess. Also, the steering column glued into 1/4" material is not strong enough. It should all look good in the end.

Oh yes, and the method for securing the hood to the chassis as drawn is not strong enough so I will add some butt straps inside the hood.

It's done. I am going to finish the chassis with a semi-gloss.

It finished off without any major problems. The hole at the rear end of the chassis for the tray tipper is not centred as I first thought but I just lowered the tray a little. All else on the plans worked out fine.

I sat and wondered how many of these were built when the plans were first published in Popular Mechanics 1976.

A real great job on your dump truck and nice colours .
I do have plans for an Ambulance with the same design and
also have a Model T Ford plans same design and it also has
plans for a garage for it . Sometime when I get a new photocopy
and scanner I will post them on the forum . You and a lot of other
Toy makers might be interested in them . So look out for them .

Lovely work.

I am going to donate this to the Lake Maquarie Woodworking Club and they will send it on to disadvantaged kids at Christmas. If you made something and can't find a home for it, donating it to charity is a great option.

Update: I was going to donate it but it is keeping my grandson so busy it is becoming priceless and I might have to keep it here for him to play with. I will make something else for the club.
