    Default Excavator

I know i am still busy on the Rob Roy loco but thought I would sneak in another wooden model which I have been preparing wood for.

This is for a great grandson who is digger mad we went to a small bird park which also had other animals which he loved on the way around there was a couple of places they were making improvements the interest in animals soon got forgotten as he found two digger to look at luckily on the Friday I had managed to get some wood for this project the day before the Park visit. He also loves tractors but Excavator won the day for this build.

So a pile of wood all machined to the correct thickness was produced and in some cases the correct width now I need to square the ends and start producing parts. There will be some more wood preparation later on but I feel as though I have enough ready to make a good start like the tracks as these are needed to drill two holes in the undercarriage.

Some of the parts are only 1/16"" and 3/16" wide(the dark wood in the pictures) thick these were fun getting a few lengths ready by putting them through the thicknesser

Thank you Peter/ i do work mainly in wood either toy/model making or woodturning. The metal working is something new to me that is why the Train is a slow progress

Spent today marking out the parts

    DSCF2735.jpgDSCF2736.jpg

And then started to cut them out still two lots to to cut out and drill before marking and cutting some more The next lot should really be getting the tracks marked and cut out over 60 parts times three so a total of over 180 just for the tracks but I may only need 56 of each but have spares just in case.

Thank you Peter it will be nice to get some more done on the loco

The pile does not look much bigger but more parts cut out. Still the boom and dipper arm require holes drilled this does not include any of the smaller parts which I will do nearer the end just trying to get as many of the major parts ready

    DSCF2738.jpg

Main engine casing drilled all the edges angled and cut outs done

    DSCF2740.jpg

The undercarriage sides 4 in total batch cut and still joined I put a blob of glue at each end this will get cut to length and will then free them all up. Also the counter weight shaped and tow hitch hole formed

Everything is not as it seems yet another photo of parts but if you look there are some extra bits starting to look like an airfix kit with all of the parts soon I will start to assemble it

    DSCF2744.jpg

Drilled the holes in the two arms and also cut out the ends to take the bucket and the rams. I also started on the bucket

    DSCF2750.jpgDSCF2746.jpgDSCF2745.jpg

I also managed to cut out the cab sides back and roof sections and while I was at it made the drivers seat

    DSCF2747.jpgDSCF2748.jpg

A couple of other bits to add to the pile the upper engine cover as well as the turntable

    DSCF2749.jpg

All I seem to be doing is just making parts I should think about the tracks but I know it is a long repetitive job and I keep putting it off. I am going to cheat a little as this needs 36 small idle wheels so I have ordered those.

Buying 36 small wheels isn’t cheating Derek, that’s being clever sir. Cheers Peter

    Hi Derek,

Sorry I have missed out on your excavator - it is coming along beautifully. Cathie and I have both been pretty crook. A bit better now.
    Your work is always fantastic

    Regards

    Keith

Yesterday and today saw the start of assembly First part was the side boards and there supports

    DSCF2752.jpg

The main engine block and boom support as well as the top engine cover

    DSCF2755.jpgDSCF2757.jpg

A little bit of how many hands did I need for the cab assembly. I also made the pedals and tiller arms

    DSCF2759.jpg

Little model makers clamps came in useful as full sized ones are just too heavy for this job. You can see the seat pedals and tiller sticks clearly in this picture

    DSCF2760.jpg

Two parts of the undercarriage glued and a pivet hole drilled through both

    DSCF2758.jpg

Now came a longer job of hand cutting the track links I found this gave a better finish than using the powered chop saw

    DSCF2761.jpg

60 links cut just another two lots of 60 parts for the tracks and that is not including the 60 pins to join them so a total of 240 parts just for the tracks. I need to make these so I can get the holes in the undercarriage at the correct distance apart. More on that later when I get to it. Still cut outs to do and holes drilled.

More work on the track link this afternoon as the morning was taken up working in the garden.

Set the bandsaw up to cut some slots first two on one side then move the set up for two on the second side. This is followed by cutting two corners off before starting to cut out the other side using my scroll saw.
As can be seen in the last photo I still have more to do
