One of the more well known events is at Falls Creek, and one of the entry requirements is a proper brake. Full specs and requirements available here:

I think I see sarcasm... The kart I made when I was old enough to know better had rear wheels of cast iron about 300 in diameter (scrounged from the scrap heap). It was better to be thrown clear!

Also had to give up on the steering rope and put the seat close enough that you steered with your feet directly on the bar, it was all just too heavy.

Fashioned a jump at the bottom of the hill, but the transition from soft ground to ply was not great. The front steering bar and wheels hit the leading edge and stopped dead, the pivot bolt was ripped from the frame and the rest of the cart kept going. Because my feet were already on said bar, I was launched through the air about 2m in true cartoon style. After mum realized I had not broken anything she could not stop laughing

I also remember a few tetanus shots, I remember more times being asked if I was still covered from the last one. Glad they are good for a while.
    Cheers,
    Shannon.

when we wanted real speed we would lay down face first and steer with our hands , probably seemed a lot quicker being closer to the ground roaring along face first .
