Very cool, lucky kids. We used to use bent over 3" nails to hold the axel on, well untill about 30k's then the nails straightened out and all hell broke loose

Thanks for the memories. When I was little, there were "Soap-Box Derby" races. Sort of a fixed design and plans, head-to-head racing down some hill in our town. I wanted to be in that so badly. Not.

I have painful memories of riding those 3" NAILS halfway down a dirt bush track when the seat parted company from the main centre board. I nailed the cart from the board to the seat and after hitting the first big bump was sitting on the nails and no seat. I remember the long painful walk home, the tetanus shot and the great difficulty in sitting down. Aah! the memories, great days they were, all the kids now only play with safe toys like I-pod, computers, etc.

Memories of when we were young. What's gone wrong with the world of backyard inventions by kids, or by dads for the kids ?? These day the powers-that-be seem to openly discourage anything that is handmade for kids to play with,- there's a Toymakers Association website that someone recommended to me, which supports BIG Business only, and totally discourages anything homemade, which they, ( Toymakers Association ), implicate is not," safe, " In my opion,- If people can't invent stuff for their own kids,- and / or the neighbours kids,- there's something very wrong with this world of ours.
Here's a couple of photos of a Billy cart I recently made for a friend's young son's Xmas present. Wheels and axles are ," up-market," - came from a dead lawn-mower, This particular Billy Cart was built according the the new owner's special instructions, which accounts for the rear-vision mirror, and the advertising on the rear, plus the piece of conduit with the red safety flag What the lad requested,- is exactly what he got,- something to do with, "bragging rights "
Made several more Billy Carts since,- also using dead lawn-mower wheels and axles.

That's one top "Billy Cart" ArmstrongJordan,
With your summer holidays, that should keep those boys entertained for days.
Top Job.

they were called a " bogie " where i was brought up in the north of the uk in the 50's and 60's.
and i made quite a few as a kid ,big old pram wheels on the back and little pushchair wheels on the front . my last one even had a drop down luggage tray underneath so i could go to the shops and get stuff for mum .
she went up in flames though i had a few rockets ( cracker night ) affixed to the rear and lit them up for a spectacular downhill run on our street , she caught alight and ended up more spectacular than i had planed burned the back end off her.
oh yeah it was carpeted too and could carry 4 kids with a squeeze .
almost always rolled over on the corner at the bottom of the hill with a full load of kids though screaming girls made for fun passengers .
