Default Finish for ply rocking horse

    Hi All

A friend is making a ply rocking horse and coated it with water based poly and it went purple.
He suspects a reaction to the glue in the ply.
He has only had some success in removing the purple, and has asked me if I could suggest anything.
We agreed that I would go to his place Sunday to discuss possible solutions.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Sorry no photo's at this stage.
I figure it's a longshot question, but worth a try.
    thanks
    Keith

sorry, nothing sensible to comment. But are you sure it's not actually a unicorn but you haven't found the horn yet? That would perfectly explain the purple.....

    A few questions,

Are the rails Vic Ash / Tas Oak?
Was steel wool used on the article?
Is the face veneer on the ply
    Vic Ash / Tas Oak?
What glue was used in the construction?

Some cross contamination from sweat or steel wool and or both could explain a colour change. PVA glues have a range of pH, some acidic, some neutral, some a mild base, so cross contamination from steel wool will / may produce an ebonizing effect. Pays to keep on top of the house keeping.

As already stated a reaction between the finish and the wood or glue. The above comment could also be a factor. No real solution except to paint it instead of trying to leave it natural.

Back in 2012 I made a rocking horse from laminated Tasmanian Oak for my grand daughter. It was to be finished in the typical gesso plus paint finish. That was until my wife and daughter decided they liked the natural colour and how our kitchen fit out also in Tas Oak had honeyed and mellowed over time.

Suddenly I faced an almost exponential rise in effort to sand to #320 or #400 for finishing with NC lacquer. I also had to become OCD about sweat staining the wood! Things we do for love!

    Hi All

The wood was Red Oak ply, not too sure about all the other points.
My mate decided to sand it back and paint it.
    Finished now.
Thank you all for your answers, most appreciated
