Discussed the Stirling with the Team Leader at the Railway. No compressor on the front. Used a vacuum brake system. Will need to research this. But a long way down the track. Coupling system is exactly the same as the Bellarine Railway so no problem on getting info there The Teamleader is also going to research this loco for me. Lots of good people on the Forum and also many people interested in railways. Thanks
All is good

While I have no experience with them, the vacuum brake valve is visible in the cab. Originally the simple brake required a vacuum to apply the brake (not 100% sure of this), later to make it an "automatic" brake, a vacuum is formed to release the brakes. Any reduction in the amount of vacuum due to application by the driver, leakage or rupture of the train pipe or coupling hoses and the brakes are applied.
Steam going through a cone causes the vacuum to be created. I believe there are two ejectors. A large one to create the initial vacuum and a smaller one to maintain it.
This might explain it further. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_brake

Hi All,
I have been working on the wheels of the locomotive. I have made up both main drive wheels and glued them together. They need lots of sanding along the spokes and should clean up nicely. There are 24 spokes to each main drive wheel. I have made up the outer rims but am still to work on the inner hubs / spokes of the front lead and trailing wheels. Have drawn up the spokes (for lead and trailing wheels- the training wheels are larger in diameter than the leading wheels) and these are adhered with UHU glue to the inner hub section to allow me to cut out the spokes on the bandsaw. All components so far have been made from 19mm pine. I have made up some special sanding tools to allow me to get to the base of each spoke. I have araldited 60 grit and 80 grit paper to both sides of 25 X 1mm thick aluminium flat so I have a double sided sanding tool.
I have laid out the line drawing of the loco with my components and included my Carlton Draught can for scale.
Also a photo of the double sided sanding tools I have made.
Hey Trev - Today won and into final of Club Mens Pairs

Great stuff all round Charlie.
Wheels are looking brilliant and it's fantastic that you've made the pairs final.
This Stirling is shaping up to be something very special!.
Keep the good work up both in the shed and on the green.
Cheers mate
Trev.
PS. "Permission to Drive!".

Nicely done!!!
Great work and thanks for the can that help us be able to have an idea of the sizes of things.
Also thanks for showing the tools you make and use, it's little tips like this that help us advance to the next level, and to me making jigs and special helpers is half the fun of model building.
It's also interesting what you started building first, [the wheels] everything else will be determined by how they come out, I've found this works out well with all the scratch builds I've make.

No overarm Peter "Bodyline Style".
You wouldn't wont to be the poor fellow from the opposition loitering around the head with Charlie "Steaming" in!.
Cheers

Hi All,
A bit more work done making all the wheels for the loco. Blanks machined out of pine and spokes all cut on bandsaw. Components are now all glued together and ready for filing and sanding of the spokes. Bowls and minding the grandson are impacting on my shed time
