    Hi All,

Today I have been working on the smokebox. It turned up OK on the lathe. I then decided to make a support bracket for the smokebox and incorporate that as a module that I can remove for painting. This module includes both the 2 drive piston assemblies so I had to cut my chasis apart and then slot the piston assembly stud retaining holes so the whole assembly can be removed. This bracket was then secured to both piston assemblies. I am really happy that the entire piston and smokebox assembly can now be removed as one unit.

I was unsure whether I had the scale correct - the boiler looked a bit small on diameter. Trevor suggested that I make up some "mock" fittings to see how the whole thing might eventually look. I made up a mock smokestack and cabin and I reckon the scale looks pretty good. Thanks for that excellent tip

I am now onto making up the "streamlining" infill that goes from the piston to the smokebox.

    Regards

    Keith

The "streamlining" between the cylinders and smokebox would in fact be part of the casting of the cylinder and valve chest and also contain the exhaust pipe to take steam from the cylinder to the smokebox blast pipe.
While you can see the cylinders, the pistons are hidden inside them with only the piston rod visible through the end covers.

    As always looking good Keith.

    Hi All,

Hope everyone had an enjoyable Australia Day.

I have been working on the piston / smokebox assembly with it's streamlining joining of the pistons to the smokebox. Decided to make the framing section out of MDF. Sketched up the form and then cut out the shape. Then glued a smaller MDF section to act as the support for my cross members.
The cross member timbers are icy-pole sticks. I chamfered the joining edges to give a more flowing join. The frames were glued to the smokebox prior to fitting the timbers. I then glued the bottom of the frames to the side pistons. This makes the Smokebox / Piston Assembly - one module that can be removed and re-assembled. I then used body filler to cover up the cross timbers and smooth out the joins to the piston and smokebox. I sanded the curvature using a piece of PVC pipe as my backing for 60, 120 and 180 grit sandpaper. I then primed the assembly and placed it in position on the loco. I will either make up a smokestack or commence work on the drive gear next. I have glued 2 pieces of 70 X 35 pine tother to give me a 70mm square blank to start on the smokestack.

    All the Best

    Keith

    Hi All,

A bad loss at bowls yesterday Good to get out in the shed.

    Working on the smokestack.

Machined the stack on the lathe out of some old 70 X 35 pine I glued together.

The base of the stack is made out of 3mm MDF. The curve was done by steaming the MDF over boiling water and then screwing onto a form that I made up that was the same diameter as the smokebox. I glued the stack onto the base and then used bodyfiller as my transition radius between the stack and it's base. I have drilled this base flange and it will eventually be "riveted" to the smokebox.

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi All,

Needed to get back out into the shed and working on the Stirling.

I decided to do something different - a bit of work on the woodlathe and I made up the front cover to the smokebox. I cut an oversize piece of 19mm thick pine and fitted it to a wooden faceplate I have made up. I then used a skew chisel to cut the domed form of the cover (it's pretty thin where it seals to the smokebox). I then removed and cut out the outside diameter with the bandsaw and then sanded round by hand. Finished off with 180 grit paper and primed - sanded and primed again.

The lock is made out of aluminium and protrudes through the cover and into the front of the smokebox. The handles are made out of 3mm Mild Steel araldited into holes drilled into the aluminium.

    Take Care All

    Regards

    Keith

You're doing better than me Keith, WAY TOO HOT here to get into the shed though I'm sure it would have helped take my mind off other things....
Keep the photos coming sir, keep that train steaming on through the production line..
    Cheers Peter
