Default I'm stuck | Matte finish vibrant paint/glaze for wooden toys?

    Hi there,

Sorry if this has already been asked before, but I did a quick search and couldn't find anything in the forum.

I'm looking for a wood glaze/tint/paint that will give a similar finish to Grimms toys - extremely vibrant and matte. eg: Grimm's Ammonite Snail Puzzle from Oskar's Wooden Ark

I've done quite a bit of research but keep running into dead ends. I'm guessing they're using something along the lines of:
    - opaque food colouring finished with shellac?
    - Biofa wood paint? (ive seen some replicas made in Russia mention Biofa, although I dont see anywhere in Aus that stocks it)
    - something else they've designed themselves...?

Right now I'm thinking about testing the following to achieve similar results:
    - chefmaster food colouring finished with shellac
    - ecolour paints (although I gave them a call and seemed like their paint isnt designed for toys) Non Toxic Paint - Australian Made - No VOCs - ecolour
    - acrylic paint finished with shellac, as a last resort.

There's so many Grimms replicas out there and Im certainly not wanting to copy their design, but I would love to achieve the same finish they've got if it's at all possible. Main reason being, I'd like the blocks Im making to not slide off each other, be smooth to touch, bright in colour and safe for children.

Sorry for the long post and thanks so much in advance for any help you may be able to offer!

    Many thanks,

    P

Looking at the one you linked to it does look like a water-based wood dye. As for a top coat it does look like it does not have one but if so probably a matt finish.

I can't recommend a supplier as I am the other side of the world to you but hope what I put above will narrow the search criteria for you

Try ubeaut polishes food safe, child safe non toxic dyes, pack of six colours is approx forty dollars, good value, can dilute quite a bit for subtle colours or less so for vibrant colours.
check out Ubeauts web site for details and finishes. I have done a few block sets using it,C9F92B4C-5066-4829-B3EB-757642AB9160.jpeg
