Imports
Was out at Macathur Square in Campbeltown Tuesday and spotted this my first thoughts was the local club had a stall in the plaza. Asian imports
I will admit they look pretty good the ships were excellent but the high gloss finish was full of dust easily seen with the eye. Priced from about $50 up. There were a few really good ones Aussie vehicles and motor bikes sorry about photos mobile phone.

I will not mention names but I was at a local show a few years ago (for local hand made goods from local club members) and there was one guy who obtained some space.
There must have been a breakdown of communication as he turned up with boxes and boxes of similar product. Very heavy polyurethane finish on everything.
They actually sold quite well as they were much cheaper than anything that could be produced by local woodworkers and of course price wins over quality most times.
When the organisers asked if he made his own goods (as they though he had when they offed him the space) he said they were made overseas by his brother. To their credit the organisers did not ask him back for a second day.Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

Wheelin' it's the same at Roselands shopping centre. I ask the lady if they were locally made and "No these are imported and better" was her reply.......

Yep ...... That is the one. I certainly miss the last minute pressure getting things ready for the show.
In relation to the goods in the photo I wouldn't be surprised if the are dipped on polyurethane to save time but it does seem to result in a very thick coating and the finish piece is more like plastic than wood ..... Although the photos don't look as bad as the ones at the show. Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

What about the toxic chemicals that went into that thick gloss. What about the destruction of rain forests to make the stuff . What about wiping out endangered species of animals.
What about the poor suckers working seven days a week for a few scraps of food (hang on that sounds like me).
Where's your plackards protesting to these shops. Show the silly women that runs the shop and thinks they are better toys a photo of some dead urangatangs that have been killed so she can get a few dollars in rent fees
I received a photo the other day from a cnc maker showing a factory overseas with seventy yes seventy big routers working 24 hrs a day 364 days a year so dont kid yourself that they are handmade. When the parts are cut out there is a production line of over 100 people sitting there each doing their own little bit as the toys go past on a conveyor, not really in the sprirt of hand made when each each person performs one small task on 100's of items a day. You would have to call the Ford cars which came off a production line hand made as well as each task was done by someone as the car moved passed.
All this so some idiot can sell them as handmade and everyone goes ooh gah over them because at the end of the production line they go through multiple passes of a spray booth with 2 pack gloss.
Phil.

Prime Mover ...... I generally agree with where you are coming from.
I too would like to see the rain forests and animals protected more than anything, but on the other hand it is a bit rich for the western society to rape their own land to give them wealth and power and then when that is achieved jump on the high horse about developing countries trying to get a leg up by using their own resources.
Perhaps as a woodworker when I see products like these I read more into them than the average purchaser. I know that there are members here who blow these toys out of the water and it is a bit of a stretch to be calling them handmade and better. It begins to devalue the good work achieved by members. Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

I am a member of the club involved, what was brought to our wood show ,was not that was agreed to, hence he was short shifted , but he had sold several 100 of $ worth before he was asked to leave.
I make models ,which sell for 10 or more time than what he sells, so Australian made products still have a niche in the market. NF.

For me, those would be something to pilfer ideas from, not something to aspire to.
