Default Looking for Timber in Sydney

Hello everyone. I made a rocking horse about 15 years ago for my baby daughter. I now want to make one for my niece, however I'm having trouble getting hold of timber in the right sizes. The plans are american, so please forgive the inches, but I'm looking for dressed, good quality pine in planks 2 inches thick and 12 inches wide, preferably in 6 foot lengths. Does anyone know of a place in Sydney where I might source this? Thanks.

    Default Pine?

    What type of pine?
    What about red cedar?
Try Mal. He will have what you want.

Hi Greg, I'm not after anything exotic, just plain old boring pine will do. It's the size of the timber that I'm having difficulty with. None of the timber yards in my area carry anything like 300mm wide x 50mm thick.

    Default 300mm wide

Mal has plenty of 2" thick slabs that could be cut to size.
Just call him in on 65858296 or 0416097827 and he can arrange..... you just missed him..... he was dropping timber to Sydney this week!

Most of the bigger sizes these days at timber yards are treated pine ( It is considered 'building timber', even 2x4 these days. And most yard hands have no idea what they are sellig - look on the ends of the uncut timber, if there is a stamp with H in it (H2, H3 & h5 are the common ones) it is treated pine - the modern treatments don't turn it green but it still eats screws & doesn't glue well.

In the south I'd suggest looking around for any boating places, they may have some idea where to get 40-50mm untreated pine. If you were in northern Sydney, give Northshore Timber a go (they deliver) or go for a drive around Brookvale as there are several yacht timber yards there, you just have to find them.

Apart from Mal's Boutique Timbers (all sorts of timber, not just exotics, a good bloke & he comes to Sydney regularly) you could check out 'Whitewood' on the forums - he has a plantation of Paulownia that he is slabbing & selling direct - just about any size you want, but you'll have to get it shipped.

Plan 'C' is to go to almost any timber yard & buy nominal 12x1 boards, then glue the pieces up out of laminations - you can either pre-glue two planks together but I think it would be better to make 2 sets of parts, then glue the cut-outs together which should give better glue contact.

Pine could be heavy as well, Mal's prices compare well to the big retailers.

Maybe also try Anagote Timbers @ Marrickville 9558 8444, Matthews Timbers @ St Marys 9833 3100 or Trend Timbers out Windsor way 4577 5277. Each specialises in furniture timbers & exotics. If they can't help you they'll be able to tell you someone that can.

I have kept out of this to allow you to give other outlets a go. I currently have a 4 metre plank 300 x 40 mm in Paulownia that might suit your needs and if your desperate. I would have to cut it in half to freight.
