    Hi All,

Day 5 of Shutdown 4. Today I have been working on the cabin gauges of the Pannier. My wife Cathie gives me her old watches that have gone flat (cheaper to buy a new one than get the battery changed).
I pull them apart and remove the inner workings. I cut and grind off the watch strap connections. I then go online and google the gauge that I am looking for. I then screen capture the gauge face. I print it out on photographic paper and then cut it out and assemble it into the watch. Then I re-assemble the watch as a gauge. The stand pipes are 2mm wire that I press fit through the winding mechanism hole. I have machined up some aluminium rod to cover the standpipes.
The gauges shown are from left to right 1) Boiler main steam pressure gauge. 2) Carriage warming steam gauge. 3) Vacuum gauge.

Obviously the wife doesn’t like change, three watch cases the same, that’s dedication to the cause!

    Loving the build.

    Hi All,

Spent a fair bit of time in the shed. Working on the cabin controls of the loco. I have a picture I am working off for the controls. Time consuming but enjoyable. Not much else to do down here. Restrictions eased for us from tomorrow.
My version of the controls so far -

    1) Reducing valve and steam pipework to carriage radiators
    2) Water Gauge
    3) Main Boiler Pressure Gauge
    4) Auxilliary steam to exhaust injector pipework
    5) Carriage warming steam gauge
    6) Regulator
    7) Live Steam Injector pipework
    8) Vacuum Gauge
    9) Vacuum Brake Valve
    10) Blower Valve
    11) Displacement Lubricator
    12) Firebox doors assembly

Most of the components are turned out of aluminium. Majority of pipework is 4mm solid mild steel rod.

    Hi All,

I have finished majority of the components in the cabin so I am now onto the roof framing for the cabin. The framing is made out of pine and glued together. The side walls will support the roofing frame. Working out how that is going to work. Anyway, here is a photo of the framing.

Morning Keith, just trying to get a sense of scale on your build, is it about 18 to 20” in the old scale?

    Hi Glenn,

Thanks for your comment. The loco is 1/6th scale of the original Pannier locomotive. My loco is 1350mm from buffer to buffer. I have attached a photo with some beer cans to indicate a scale relationship.

Thanks Keith, that’s a bit larger than I was thinking, I was working on the clamps in your photo being 6” but they are obviously 12”.
    Enjoying the build, thanks.

    Thumbs up

That's going to be one good sized engine.
What would be the years this engine would have see service and how many cars could it pull, just trying to get the feel of it's power?

Keith, please correct me if I am wrong.
At a scale of 1/6, if the original track gauge is 4' 8 1/2" or 1435mm, the scale gauge, or the distance between the rails the engine will stand on is 239mm or about 9 3/8".

For those who might still be lost as to the size of Keith's model, a common ride on live miniature railway gauge is 7 1/4" or 7 1/2". This is bigger, but stationary model.

Thank you for your many updates.
