Hi All,

I have been working on the bunker end of the locomotive.

I turned up the buffers on my wood lathe out of pine. The hand rails are made from 4mm mild steel rod and the ferrules turned out of aluminium. They are secured in position using 4mm MS split pins.

The steps are made out of aluminium angle.

The top back section of the cabin is 6mm MDF and the protection bars on the windows are made of 2mm MS wire.

Looking good Keith. Just needs some steam and water issuing, a rosy fire and heat haze and the crew will be around to take it out of the shed. All most time for a test run in workshop primer.

Hi All,

Even though Regional Vic is out of lockdown we have been staying at home and given me the opportunity of staring some paintwork on my locomotive.

I have used "Brunswick Green" as my main livery colour. The black is called "Midnight Sky".

It is slow work. I will need to dismantle the chasis to get to the wheels, springs etc.

Hi All,

Had to pull all the locomotive apart for the painting.

Painted in Great Western Railway green and black livery. The last thing I did was to fit the roof of the cabin. It is 1mm aluminium sheeting.
The cabin windows are made from clear PVC sheeting.

Next step is to make up the "G W R" on the sides of the locomotive and also numbers. These will be out of MDF that will finally be sanded down to under 1mm thick and the secured to the loco.

Hi All,

Thought I would share how I do numbering and lettering for my locos.

Cathie (my wife) uses letters and numbers from spotlight (made out of MDF) as stencils for her quilting. I borrowed letters G, W and R (for the Great Western Railway) and scanned them on my PC. I then reduced the size to replicate the size for the scale of my locomotive. I then printed them out and glued onto 3mm MDF

I then cut out each letter on my scroll saw. (Can get a bit fiddly when you get smaller font).
I then file smooth using needle files.
Next comes the tricky (and painful for the fingers) part. Using varying grit size sandpapers. I sand down each letter to around 0.5mm thick. Make sure you use a flat surface to sit the sandpaper on. I use the table of my band saw. Then I paint the letters in the standard colour of the particular railroad.
I then glue the letters to the side of the loco. I use 5 minute Araldite and hold the letters in position with sticky tape until the Araldite cures.

Below is a photo of the loco with the Railroad lettering. Lettering is on both sides.
