I've seen a few tables with chess board inserts, but haven't seen too many chess pieces that were made from matching timber.
Have you thought of making a set to go with the table? Either on the lathe or scroll saw? There's a book of patterns for 9 different sets from space looking to one made with wood working tools , one with a sealife theme, one with a gardening one.
If you want to stick out and have something unusual that sure would do the trick!

I'm sorry.. there are no templates..... I was talking about patterns from a book.
"Chess pieces you can make on the scroll saw".
You might be able to borrow the book from your library... amazing the things they can get for you

Google to your rescue......
first download google sketch up.... that is your design software.... and free too!
Then to find ready made plans for tables.... google for them.... they are out there... but I'd go to the library... they have heaps of wood working books there with plans in them!!!!! Also.... it's FREE too.
As for wood, well..... usually I look at what I have on hand and then think of a project... so in your case... cash strapped.... look around .... see what wood is available to you at a cost you can afford. No sense anyone telling you what fancy woods to use if you can't afford to buy it. As nice as special timber is, it's also costly... for a project like yours I'd think the main ingredient would be your workmanship and design. YOu can always use stain if you really need different colours.
oh.... and the pictured chess set.... you'd have to modify it.. the bottoms have to be flat of course and you'd have to draw up the desing you need for the other side .... if you make them into 3D compound cuts with the scroll saw.... you could turn them, but the horse would be difficult....
Guess you could do it the easy way and cut flat pieces out of fairly thick wood and then mount them on stand.... lots of ways you can do this...

Not quite a chess table,
Attachment 105540
but this was made out of scrap timber. Mebau decking boards and Meranti door frames for the top. The centre strip was a bit of left over 42x19 Tas Oak. Merbau for the skirt of the table. The legs from recycled hardwood house framing. A peice of spare 6 mm ply for the base. same materials for the charis.
Total cost of timber = $0. Maybe $5 for the hinges ($200 for the thicknessser)
I like it better as each pice was left over from renovations in my house, rather than buying timber for the job
