    Default Puzzle box.

I posted this box in the box making section about two years ago but thought it may get some interest with the toymakers. Maybe it will go on Sir Stinkalots" To Do"' list.
The box is made from Tasmanian myrtle and the discs are all huon pine.
When the box is closed you cannot remove the lid. It takes about 47 moves of the discs to finally be able to remove the lid. I usually put it away closed with a $5 note in it and if the kids can open it, then they are $5 better off.
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

That is great like the idea of the $5 inside, it would even keep the big kids quite for a while.
Where did you get the plans from

    Hi Digger.
It is a good puzzle box that takes a while to open. There were no plans, I just saw one on a website that showed puzzles by a brilliant craftsman in the US. This was one of them. I figured out how to make it and went from there.
If you want, I can take a few more pictures that may help if you have the desire to build one. The build needs to be accurate, lots of precision.

I'm guessing you start with the one at the 2 o'clock mark in the first picture.
The outside one there in the corner.

Without seeing whats under the box edges, not sure it can be done.
Maybe by looking at the last picture I could work out what moved to where.

47th move is 4 o'clock in the last image ?

    Can't see the disk detail.
How do you stop them from falling out when inverted ?

Is there a slot in the box sides for every outside disk ?

2nd move is inside disk closest to outside disk at 2 o'clock.
    3rd move is 3 o'clock.

Thank you for the offer Ruddy it is just handy to have a source of plans if I ever decide to make a box. I can also understand the need for accurate workmanship for this type of box to work so another thumbs up from me

Is there any reason why the "biscuit" slots can't be a solid channel around the inside of the box?
Are the tops just disks? if so how do they spin or do they have posts going thru the lid that have washers and screws?
Did you turn a disk on top of a post because gluing posts to the back of the disks does not look strong enough seeing how thin the disks are..
I think I need to try and make one..

    Hi Peter,
I will take a few more pictures for you after I remember how to get the lid off!
The pictures will help I think.Would love you to make one as you may come up with some different ideas.

I'm now thinking its not the top disks that lock the lid to the base. Do the top disks go thru the lid carcass to disks below that are the actual locks.
A picture of the inside of the lid would help unless its covered in, which could also be done.

Digger.. thanks for that. Here is a link to one of the Japanese boxes I made a couple of years ago from Bruce Vineys site.
    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f87/ja...zle-box-84956/
Making one of these was a bit of fun. The remarkable thing is that this box is in the kitchen family room all year around , summer and winter. and the slide joints are just as sweet as when I made the box. It was from WA sheoak that I machined down to 3.2 mm thick and there is no movement.
