Default shape sorter - how to make the shapes?

    Hi all,

I want to make a shape sorter for my son. I've got a pretty good idea on how to make the box, but no idea how to make the shapes. I haven't got many tools as we just migrated. I've got an electric handheld jigsaw and a simple non-electric old style fretsaw. My husband is buying me the bench drill from Aldi for my birthday (is it as good as it seems? I'm not hyperactive with shed-work?)

I thought I could use either the fret or the jigsaw to saw each shape 4 times out of 7mm triplex and glue it together. I'd use the drill to saw the circles. But it feels like there should be an easier way. I'd want them to be about an inch thick, I guess.

Besides the circle and cube I'd like a pentagon, star, oval/egg, cross and maybe some other shapes, not sure yet. It sort of depends on how I'll make the box and which other ideas get muddled into this.

Might be an idea to see if there is a mens shed somewhere near you.
They will have those tools you don't have yet.
They are not expensive to join and have sanders and bandsaws etc, and will show you how to use them.
They also usually have a wood store where you can get timber.

While you build your own tool collection its a great place to use stuff.

there is one about half an hour drive from here. It's too far as it's still quite hard to leave mr monkey behind. I already have to leave him for work and it's such a pain. He's still mostly breastfed.

I'd love to join, but besides that it isn't cheap when you're on my budget, we might also be moving again soon and then it's just too much money all up. Even though the place was awesome and they had great tools and experts around. Maybe if I knew we're staying and in half a year from now, I'd do that. But at the moment, my little shed it is.

what tools would you make to saw, say, an inch thick star?

Something like this 13" hand saw from Bunnings would be a start....
IRWIN Jack Veneer Saw - 325mm - Bunnings Warehouse
    or this one

One of those aldi bandsaws for 99 bucks would have been ok for 1inch.
for plain pine even the scroll saw for 79 would have been ok.
Otherwise if you want handsawn maybe a coping saw, which is a bit bigger than your fretsaw.
