    Default Solitaire Game

    Toy maybe game Yes

My attempt at writing a wip
W.I.P. of A Solitaire Board Game
First of all I will not go through all the wood preparation just the main marking out and production of the dimples etc.
Measurements are not critical but I never go below those I have stated in this build I have used those I have stated below
Anyway once the boards are cut to 10” square no smaller and to a thickness that suits yourself in this case 1 3/8” (normally I have mine over 1” thick). It is then sanded to 240grit all round

Next job is to find the centre as this makes sure that every thing is symmetrical. Note that I have marked the centre with 2 lines running from the centre point of the sides rather than diagonally

From these 2 (I’ll call them datum lines) datum lines measure outwards and on both sides of the line and at both end 5 equal spaced marks 7/8” (you can just see them on one side above the ruler)

Once this is done mark across the board from these marks to form a grid making sure you take the lines right to the edge of the board. This is important for later work.

This is all of the main marking out that is required
Now the routing first a circle need to be routed with a radius of 4 3/8” using a 5/8” round nose bit, This is for the marble storage when they are removed from the board.

The next step is to do the dimples for the marbles to sit in this is done using the router with a fence.

As can be seen in the photo these are plunge routed with the fence against one side then the board is rotated 180 degrees and the routing done on the opposite side
Note the piece of plastic on the fence this has a mark on the centre point which lines up with the layout lines make sure you are vigilant when doing these as a dimple in the wrong place end the project.
You can see below the centre line marked on the fence

The dimples are placed on each intersection so as to form a pattern as below
    ..........O O O
    ..........O O O
    ..........O O O
    O O O O O O O O O
    O O O O O O O O O
    O O O O O O O O O
    .........O O O
    .........O O O
    .........O O O
    Or as some people prefer

    ........O O O
    ........O O O
    ..O O O O O O O
    ..O O O O O O O
    ..O O O O O O O
    ........O O O
    ........O O O

I used the first layout for my games. Below is a view after the dimples are routed

The last bit of work needed to complete the build is to rout a chamfer to the top and bottom edges

The only things that I did not describe in this W.I.P. was the preparation of the wood and the finish, the finish is left to you as everyone has a personal preference. You can alter the measurements to suit yourself but do not go smaller than I have done unless you can find smaller marbles.
The marbles I have used are 5/8” diameter
Below is the Game with a finish and the marbles installed.
I used finishing oil on mine.

    Hope you enjoyed the build

Definitely a very interesting WIP, well done. You have done a great job and it looks terrific. I'm sure there will be a few of those being made in the near future. Thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks Guys this was done as an experiment in writing a WIP as well as a small "How I did it". If it helps someone take up their tools and make one then it has worked.

Just started with a simple WIP next time will post as I go along as you did Bret probably easier

Thanks heaps "digger" for the great notes & WIP photos.
I've made them before for my wife to give to clients for fine motor re-training but none as famcy or as good looking as yours.
I made so many one year that I made a template, but for a square board.
Again "thank you", a post very well done.
    Cheers, crowie

So I have a dumb question. Is this game one you play by yourself?

Yes it is Bret the centre marble is removed and then you jump adjacent marbles vertically and horizontally not diagonally though the idea is to end up with only one marble left.
    Hope this makes sense

And it's very easy to muckup and end up with a whole stack of marbles on the board.
If you eventually work out the strategy to getting to one, try timing yourself & race against the clock.
It's a great thinking game as well as fine motor co-ordination.
Digger, the end results look great.......Cheers, crowie

I may have to make one then. Of course now I will have to buy the rockler bit made for making the marble holes.

That is really cool Digger. My grandpa and I always played a marble game called Wahoo. He made several boards. I bet he would have liked this game as well. I may have to make one in his honor. My wife and I enjoy playing board games as well as single player games. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for the link Patch when I started making these there was only the one now I have made 9 and keep saying NO MORE .
But you never know I think it would pay me to make a template. Problem is if I make one then no one will want one Sod's Law
