    Default Spinning Top

    Hi All,

I am now onto my second item for the kids at Christmas. I have made them before, but refined it a bit.

I have done some sketches if anybody is interested in making them.

    Spinning Top1.jpg Spinning Top2.jpg

Because I am going to make a lot of them - I made up a template for the handle - made of MDF

    1.jpg

Trace onto the handle material (40 X 19 pine)

    2.jpg

Drill the 8mm clearance hole and the 25mm hole before you do any shaping of the handle

    3.jpg 4.jpg

Cutout the shape on the bandsaw and the use a rasp and then sand smooth

    5.jpg 6.jpg

    For the spinning top -

    Refer to my sketches.

Taper 8mm dowel in the lathe or on plate sander.

    Drill 3mm hole for string

Make 2 collars (Top and Bottom) to secure the CD in position

Araldite the collars and CD in position (as per Sketch)

I use paper printable CD's as you can add your own design, but any CD will do.

The string handle is made out of 8mm dowel. String is 500mm long. Suggest you dip the end of the string in PVA glue - it is then much
easier to thread the string into the dowel (Spinner)

Finished Handle and spinner - ready to go !!

PS - the one for the kids will be painted and have stickers attached

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi All,

Well I have completed 20 Spinning Tops for kids for Christmas.

I have put butterfly stickers on 10 and Construction vehicle stickers on the other 10. It's up to the kids to decide which one they want.

I have decided I will keep on making toys for a while yet and then get back onto the Thatcher Perkins.

I am going to make some Formula 1 Racing cars, but I still have to design it and draw it up. When done - I will put the plans on a new thread for anyone who is interested.

    Regards

    Keith

Great job Keith and thanks for the detailed drawings. Might have to do a few as we had a clean out of unused CD's and DVD's last weekend.
