STAR'S WIP End Loader
I have been busy with work, trying to learn carving, and making some toys.
I have another of Prime Movers Fire Engine in the pipe line. This time i have taken some poetic licence to change the appearance of it seeing this one will be my fourth. But you will have to wait till its finished because knowing me I might fall at the last hurdle.
The WIP I am doing here is for my grandson. I have just started and the wood I had to make the wheels was a terrible choice. It was very dense which was good for an endloader that will be played in the sand and dirt but hard as hell. Even had trouble with the two forstner bits to give the wheel its appearance.
Then when turning the wheel down to size the ends were not very forgiving, Going slightly off the edge caused a tear put so instead of doing four wheels had to do six. I was not game to round of the edges with the turning tools so just used some 100 grit sandpaper to get the shape I wanted. I will finish it off a bit better down the track when nearing completion.
I like to have Poly on the wheels and paint on the End Loader.
This will be a warts and all discription of a battlers journey into toymaking mainly for his grandson who most likely could not give a toss. Like all kids they don't really care how much you know but more 'How much you care. "

Unfortunately the little fellow is in Mackay. So I do not see much of him. That is why for his bithday and Christmas I try to make something to let him know that he is not forgotten by Nanna and Pop.
Although when we did go to Mackay for his last Birthday he wore me out.
See you tomorrow Wendy.

G'Day Pete,
Thank you for taking the time to do the WIP photos of the tractor.
Can't help with the turning the wheels, I just use holesaws.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers, Crowie

Phil.
The crowd was ten deep around you and I needed a stick to bash my way through just to say G'day the first time.
But I did see and converse with a few of your clients at the Forum stand. I even signed a few of them up so hopefully we will have more Toy Makers in the near future.
See God works in mysterious ways.
I still hope to catch up with you.

Ok, I have not really been idle, I have a day job and a family. My problem is I have to have a few things on the go all the time. I have an interest in learning how to carve as well, so this project has taken a back seat for awhile.
But the little fellows birthday is on the 15th of this month so had to get busy and try to have it done in time.
I really hate doing a W.I.P. mainly because I am just finding my way in this woodworking and am never that confident that each step is going to come out ok. But, here goes anyway as lately despite many of my stuff ups i have been able to get out of them somehow, at least to the standard I am at.
Some toys and works need a fair bit of exactment ( is that a word ) but this End Loader is to go with the Dump Truck I made for him as a Christmas present. it is meant to be played in the dirt and the sandpit.
Having said that, I like to get the paint work as good as I can so when i use acrylic paint I like to thin it down as much as possible. It means i have to put more coats on. What you see painted has five thin coats, I think I will have to do about three more.
The first two or three coats look really ordinary especially when you use cheap wood and any offcuts I can find or steal. One advantage of doing things other than Toy making is you can sometimes use some techniques that you would not think of otherwise.
Because I am starting to learn to Woodcarve, not in the sculpture sense we have on our forum but more like the American way of Whittling and Caricature carving I have learnt a few things to help my toy making. With Acrylic paints I use a hairdryer to dry the paint so that after less then a minute i can put on another coat.
You guys probably know that but i had to learn it from the Woodcarving guys over there.
The photos below are in two parts the first is the painted ones which still need some more coats and then the parts that are almost completed but might need some cleaning up and a light sand.
There are a few small parts that have to be made as well, like the axels and the pin that slots the two halves together. the roof of the cabin has to be completed and i am sure their is something else as well.
