    Default started my dozer

Finally, made enough room to get some fun time in on the tools.
    This is a Toys'n'joys bulldozer.
Started by turning the supplied wheels into pulley shapes to carry the tracks (pic 1 & 2). Then got on the planer and took a piece of pine down to 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" which I then put through the router, using a 1/2" straight bit to take the shoulders off the top and trench out the underside.(pic 3) This will be cut into 48 slices at 3/8" thick to make the track pieces. Small guide blocks 1/4" x 3/8" will be glued to the underside to keep the track in the pulleys (wheels). Pic 4 is just a shot of the workshop showing off the set up, on the left a Triton extension table with grinder, linisher, scrollsaw, drill press, mitre saw and two small vices, then the Triton planer, then the Triton router then the Triton table saw then the new lathe.
Back to work tomorrow but I may be able to start drilling the holes in the pine that takes 1/8" dowel that pins all the track pieces together, I think the drill size for them is 9/64", so the dowel doesn't bind up. Must check that. Last pic is the blueprints for the dozer, everything listed in imperial so rather than convert I'll do it all in inches.
    Cheers, Billy

Well I thought I'd cleaned up enough to get into it.
Think I could find the chuck key for the drill press? na! and my neighbour wasn't home so I couldn't borrow his, grumble grumble, oh well, Tuesday I'll be back into it, going to set up a jig on the drill press to drill out the 9/64th holes and cut the pieces off on the (hand powered)mitre saw as I go.
Got some walnut and kauri pine that I might be able to use on this. I'd like to use contrasting timbers to get a nice contrast from piece to piece, probably use black japan on the darker parts. Haven't worked out what to use on other pieces yet.
I'm excited! finally getting to do the fun stuff.
got to admit, I'd forgotten how much mess you make with a lathe, even when working on small stuff. Part of the fun I spose.
    cheers, billy

    Thumbs up

Go for it Billy. Want to see a dozer as I was allowed to play with my cousin's model about 55 years ago!

Had trouble with the pine track pieces, too weak when cut down to final size and shape. So I grabbed some unknown hardwood I had and I've cut and routered that to size. Next step is drill and cut some test pieces. Hopefully that'll be Saturday.

Busy in the yard all day Thursday and today so Sat/Sun? is playtime.

Will put pics up as soon as I get a result with the hardwood. Can't think of what to do if that doesn't work, don't want to use the last of my jarrah if I can help it, but I'm sure the jarrah would be a suitable timber.

    Cheers, billy

    Default going better now

ok the hardwood seems to be working better.

    My neighbour thinks its redgum.

Photo 1 are the two pieces, photo 2 they are held together with a 1/8" drill bit through the holes. To get them to work together I had to round off the shoulders and the leading edge of the tongue.

I was cutting the pine at 3/8" (9.5mm) so I upped it to 10mm for the hardwood and brought the hole out another 1.5mm on the tongue to get a better clearance between the pieces when they bend. They have to bend around a 2" wheel without any binding, this seems to have done the trick.

I also rounded off the tongue and the shoulders to help with the smooth movement.

Adjusting the jig into exact position was crucial to get every piece spot on, now I've only got 44 more to make.

I'll put a small fine file over the edges that are staying straight just to take the burrs off, might be more gentle than sanding.

    Back to the drill press!

    Cheers, billy
