Keith, Keith, Keith.... We need to educate your grandson on beautiful trains to build as in the words of an old friend, he's selected a brick on wheels !! Cheers, Peter

Crowie,
I had to go back into my picture archives but I found it. This is from Trev. He reckoned one of the ugliest locos he had seen (and it's steam) In Perth in Tasmania. The diesel is not looking too bad

Keith that may be one ugly train but to my scratch building mind, it would be a easy build!
One long 3"or 4" dowel 12 wheels a little box on the back and it's done. LOL
But for you it would be a 10" dowel.
I typed this before going back and seeing the earlier post and found your next engine and I like it!!!

And this would be a 12" by 12" by 8' long me thinks.

Keith, I have a decent range of model trains (all N scale, I'm afraid probably too small to get patterns from), mostly American D/E's SD40-2 snoot nose, GP7, GP9, SD90, GP20 etc, a few yard switchers, plus a lot of freight cars, oil tankers, flatbeds, stock cars (cattle). I also have a few aussie NSW engines as well, 442 (similar to your next project, except the engine is reversible, could dive either direction), 81 class (candy striped scheme,).
Man of them are exact to scale, brands of Kato, Atlas, Weico, etc, so if you would like to borrow some of these for reference, please let me know, I'd me more than happy to lend them to you for your project.

Keith
don't despair. To me it looks exactly the sort of "brick on wheels" that you and your grandson can build together. Whilst it might be simple, with little detail, those very characteristics should make it an ideal project for a 6 year old.
You get to turn most of the wheels while he shapes and paints the body.
lucky you me thinks.
on second thoughts -- luck both of youregards from Alberta, Canada

Keith, your Rocket is progressing nicely.
If you go ahead and build an S class, I probably have little information to help you with the 3 cylinder steam version. (As built, or Stremlined?)
However, I do have a book, "The A7 Era" which could assist you with a deisel version.
While a lot of readers would think a deisel S class would be easy to knock up, there can be a lot of detail in the bogies, body, ends and roof. Like most engines there were modifications made over their life.
What ever you decide to build, we will enjoy reading about it.

Thanks Kevin,
For a little more detail - I could actually do the interior of the locomotive as well - including the actual diesel motor.
Just a thought.

Keith
