    Default MR Toad goes to Hong Kong

    Even though this is a carving I have recently done I think he could have been included in the Toy section because he is in the Caricature style which really does not fit that well in our carving section that in my opinion is more a serious sculpture type area.

    He was given to my daughter who works for an International Airline as a birthday present which was before the Annual State of Origin Rugby League best of three series between Queensland and New South Wales. He is named after a past great Queenslander and has been named Wally the Toad.

    Wally has been a busy boy the last week. He has flown to Hong Kong as a Staff Mascot and got upgraded to business class with a bottle of French champagne presented to him.

    On the return trip he was promoted from Mr Toad to First officer and here he is in the Cockpit.

    Busy little guy. I can see the smile on his face standing next to the wine.

    Don't worry about the colours Arthur. I have another one in the design room. This time maybe it will be more to your liking. Cockroach Blue. The same colour as Sticky the Coaches face after Wally and the boys big win.

    They tell me it is very cheap at the moment, know one wants one. lol

    I love the "CANE TOADS";
    plus I especially love seeing the "Queensland State Flag" flying on top of the Sydney Harbour for the sixth year in a row.
    Sorry but I was born & bred in "Gods our Country" QUEENSLAND.
    Oh, back to the toy carving, well done STAR, nice job.
    Cheers, crowie

    Very cool Pete,

    Myself being on the other side of the globe I have no idea what you chaps are going on about but it is humorous. I had been wondering what in the world the pic in your avatar was about and now I know.

    Hi Bret

    It is about the rivalry between two States in Australia, Queensland and New South Wales. It goes right back to Federation and when Queensland separated from New South Wales.

    Queensland has always been seen as a branch office of New South wales and Victoria even though most of the exported wealth of the country now comes from Queensland and another State Western Australia.

    The majority of real, born and bred Queenslanders, not the Snowbirds that flock which you guys call the carpetbaggers, believe we get dudded more times than not from the two traditional founder States. The Snowbirders from South of the border are called Mexicans here in Queensland.

    Hence when this annual series of football is on, it means much more to Queensland. Their was a time when we even got dudded on the football field and at the moment the Queensland Coach looks like being sued by the Ruling body which just happens to be in New South Wales and controlled by the New South Wales power brokers.

    The only thing you guys in the States could match the rivalry with is a football game between the North and the South but I think that that would be impossible because of the Civil War and the Political and Racial background.

    The majority of us look at our State of Origin as good fun, especially when us Queenslanders have a champion team that has won six series in a row and could go on and win six more. But that has not always been the case and for years we got our floggings too, but even then we rightly believed we were playing against a stacked deck.

    You will be able to tell the non Queenslanders on here by the barbs that will come over the fence in the form of incoming missiles. But it is all good fun except for the Power brokers at the top where they take it a bit more serious, hence the potential Court battle.

    It is things like that that keep the fire and intensity flowing for a few more years.

    Pete

    ps

    The term Cane Toads came about when back in the Sixties or early Seventies one champion Queensland player had enough of the floggings and called New South Wales a team of Cockroaches. It gave them quite a stir up and they came back and called us Cane Toads.

    Hence why Queensland are proudly called Cane Toads and New South Wales rightly Cockroaches.

    Star,- Thanks for that explaination of the difference between Queenslanders, and their southern neighbours, ( NSW-ites ), as I have the answer to where the terms, " Cane Toaders, and Cockroaches, " came from.
    Me,- I am a, " Croweater," from South OZ. "
    While I think of it,- what are Northern Territorians, West Aust-ies; Vics, & Tassies called ? For, ( A ), curiousity's sake, and, ( B ), maybe I might be able to design some interesting Scroll Saw Plaques, & / or Intarsia patterns using these uniquely Aussie names for the various Australian States, & Territories.

    In my navy days in the 70's;
    we call Queenslanders, "banana benders";
    Victorians, "mexicans"
    West Aussies, "sand gropers"
    NSW, "welshmen"
    Tassie, "Inbreeds"
    Sth Aussie, "croweaters"....
    All very politically incorrect today.......
    As for ACT & NT, I don't recall as I never knew anyone from there.
    I hope that helps and apologies in advanced......
