With the New Year comes progress.....
With the New Year comes progress.....
Thank you GENTS ALL for your encouragement.
Firstly I had to fix a huge mistake on the cabin were the tipper chassis is fitted....took an hour & a half, but okay now.
The cutting list says one thing and the written ''how to'' says another; I hadn't put the one & one together.... [I wish their were patterns with the plans].
I also have remade the sidestep as I misread the cutting list, but then added the detail of a front mudflap [I hope you can see it in the photo].
The front axle assembly is ready for gluing in place and the rear is almost there.
I've been working on the ''tipper back'' and again repairing some mistakes, but I think it's coming along okay now.
In the plans it says to used 3/16'' Axle Pegs for the lights but my cupboard was bare.....I remembered that a bloke on the forum in Brisbane had started selling wooden wheels & parts so after a search I found ''Wooden Joys''. The price & availability were good so made the purchase. Simon gave me great service too.
Some progress photos are attached.
Cheers, crowie
PS - The bandsaw is having to wait all its final setups as I wanted to do the truck build first.....so much more fun [except for the mistake repairs].....

Coming along great Peter. Certainly is taking shape i like the exhaust stacks.
Who's plans are they, glad you have found a supplier of bits there I know what it is like to order from suppliers overseas even when they give a great service its the time and cost of postage that is the bugbear.
I see you still have your foreman overlooking the work hope he is keeping you on track

Looking really good Peter. This is going to come up great.
Those wheels set it off - they look much better than the ones in the pic of the tipper on the Woodcraft site. Just been checking out their article index. They have a pretty good range of projects.
Keep up the good work.... Steve

I've a busy couple of days.....
I've a busy couple of days with yesterday doing the yard, a whole day job.....not that it takes me all day but I need time to recover...
I'm continuing to personalize the build and that's what I've done with the ''tipper back'' with the ribbing using the merbau strips.
There's a bit of a mockup too in the photos.
I think I'm starting to get toward the home stretch with the making of the parts & modifications before assembly, glue and 4 coats of polyurethane clear gloss.
The rear axle assembly plus the rear bumper & lights are the main ones.
The Australia Post let me down with my axle pegs order from ''Wooden Joys''; they didn't arrive as expected on Friday so the lights are still to be marked out & done.
Again GENTS, thank you for the encouragement and support...
Cheers crowie
PS - we'll slow down somewhat this week with 3 medical appointments.... oh well back to routine...Life's good!!

Some assistance please....
Some assistance please....
Should I do a cutout for the exhaust stacks on the tipper back cabin protector
OR
set the tipper back a little further back along with the repositioning of the rear axle unit????
THANK YOU in advanced......

Looking really good Pete.
I think the Merbau strips are a top addition. Makes it look even tougher.
Regarding the exhausts, I reckon that small semi-circular cutouts would look pretty good.
(And easier too.)
Moving the tray back will leave too much gap between the tray and the back of the cab, in my opinion.
See what others think.....
I hope all goes well with your medical appointments.
(You've reminded me that I need to mow in the next couple of days.)... Steve

The tipper looks top notch Peter. Im not sure what I would do on the stacks. I have never seen a truck with cutouts. I have seen some that have the exhaust turn at a 90* bend right at the top and come out the side underneath the bed. Does that make sense?

Bret's quite right - I've never seen cutouts like I described either, on a real truck.
Many, though, have the whole corners missing, like the two below.
Might be a possibility.

Thank you Steve & Bret,
After your replies I did a google image search and yes I am going to have to rethink this....
I don't really want to do a cut away on the cabin protector as in your photos Steve & many that I found....
The side option just doesn't feel right??
I may fix the exhaust stacks to the sides of the cabin on the back corner....I'll have to do another ''mockup'' & photo for some opinions....
Good news though; Australia Post delivered the parcel I was expecting on Friday so some making out & drilling is in order for today....
Cheers, crowie
PS - While doing the google image search I found a sign I'm going to try to find ....

The 'Peterbilt' emblem would look good, and very fitting since the tipper is 'Peter built'.
You could possibly print one then glue it to a thin piece of timber, the way I make my model number plates. A coat of aerosol poly seals it well.
I agree that the stacks are probably best located on the sides, just outside the tray at the rear corners of the cab. My Google search last night turned up heaps of trucks with that layout.
Looking forward to seeing it progress. It's coming up great.... Steve

The lights are mounted but not yet glued....
Here is another mockup with the exhaust stacks on the side....What do you think please??
Cheers, crowie
PS - Steve, I've sent an email to Peterbilt in the USA asking about ''tie pins'' from there Peterbilt Shop...

It looks good to me. I don't think Handy ever worked so hard when he was here in TX. LOL.

Looks fine to me too - the best option I think.
The Peterbilt tie pins are a good idea.... Steve
