Tow Truck - Norm Marshall Style
The eldest grandson said we needed a Crane or a Tow Truck so I thought I'd have a go.
I like the Norm Marshall plans and have used them to make a truck or two before so that's were I started.
I have used the basics of the front of the "Ttuck Tractor" as he calls it but what to do for the back.
I then remembered that some time ago Graham [Matador] sent me some sketches of plans of a crane he'd built.....that'll do!!
It's been a MAKE UP AS I GO PROJECT but it's slowly coming together.
The truck is about 370mm [14.5"] long, will be about 140mm [5.5"] wideand 165mm [6.5"] high.
The base is pine; the cabin is laminated cypress pine; engine is laminated merbau; grill is tassie oak; arms are merbau; the head is orgeon; the wheels are tassie oak; mudguards are american cherry [ex-old organ]...
Here's some photos of were I'm up to; nothing is glued together and I still have lots more parts to make.....
Appreciate any comments & suggestions, thank you.
Cheers, crowie

Hi crowie ,
Only thing I can see is if you are using push bike tubes for the pulleys to wind
the crane up on the truck you might need to make the small front pulley like the back one so when you attach the tube onto the pulleys it won't come off .
Push bike are great for that sort of things . A great toy maker like you couldn't get lost . You do some top stuff .
Cheers Graham

G'day Derek,
To be honest, I'm not quite sure as yet.
The pulley on the end of the main pivot axle will be connected to the winch pulley; it will have a length of cord down over the "cotton reel" shaped pulley on the end of the boom for the hook.
Does that make sense; i hope it'll work???
Cheers, crowie

Looks great Crowie. Only suggestion I have is adding a 3rd axle. As many of the big Semi wreckers have 3.

Some progress.....
Some progress.....
Been a slow week after muscle spasams in my lower back & 3 days rest.
I've cut the extra 4 wheels & redone the rear axle to make it a tri-axle.
I've fitted the steering wheel and glued the engine to the cabin plus onto the base.
I've started making a set of exhaust stacks.
I've had another go at making a roo-bar [bullbar] but it needs some attention.
I made it bulky looking with a 15deg froward facing slope for the top rail.
Tell me what you think for the photos.
Cheers, crowie

I LIKE IT!!!!
Didn't mean to cause you more work but the 3rd axle makes it look great.

This is a beauty, Peter.
I've been quietly watching it progress.
You've kindled an interest in toymaking.
Keep up the good work.
Edit: Forgot to say: I like the bullbar. The forward tilt looks great.... Steve
