First and second toy builds, truck and bobcat
Hello all, I was encouraged to start a thread in the appropriate section so here we are.
These are my first attempts at toy making and as I have limited equipment and skills they take quite for me to make.
Two years ago I made a tipper truck as a Christmas present for my nephew and this year I made a Bobcat to fit in the rear.
The main reason I am posting is because I have forgotten the name of the pinkish timber used in the bucket and wheels, any ideas? It was an Aussie timber and it(and my stupidity) seems to have cooked my new router bit.

Welcome Ubernooband and great job on the vehicles. The ply certainly looks interesting.
As for the red timber it looks like Redgum to me. Some Redgum is quite soft and others are really hard.
Was it a cheap or expensive router bit that you destroyed?Dallas

Thanks Treecycle, I was looking at Redgum earlier but couldn't find a nice pic to be certain if that was it. It reflects the light really nicely, the wheels almost flash as they rotate, made a BBQ handle from it too and it looks fantastic.
Router bit was a Carb-i-tool.

I would say the pinkish timber is for sure red gum & I love the lovely shine you managed to give it,it is a very hard timber but well worth the effort as it takes a beautiful finish.Cheers Peter

Okay thanks, I'll try to buy some more in the future and next time I'll use the 1/2" router as the 1/4" router's bearings were starting to sound pretty shot at the end. It still seemed easier to work than some American Rock Maple that I attempted to make a dash out of, Chinese router bits had no chance against that stuff.

Went out and bought some timber today, sadly the timber yard had emptied their offcuts bin so I had to open my wallet
Grabbed some 6" wide Merbau and Tassie oak, Oregon, Blue gum and a few small offcuts from the bin.
Next toy is going to be a rolling turtle with a moving head and tale, not sure if I'll lay the timber so it will be parallel to the ground or at 90 degrees.
The body will just be Merbau(sp?) and Tassie Oak, the head and tail may be Jarrah.

Thanks Artme , I'm not all that skilled yet so I'm starting with toys as they don't have to be perfect to be enjoyed. I have been told my nephew has been playing with the bobcat quite a bit which is good.
The turtle has become an Armadillo.

Got a bit done today but it doesn't look much as everything is currently clamped as the glue sets.
The tail moves up and down and in and out, I didn't want to go crazy with the tail movement as it will be used on floorboards and I didn't want the wheel to skid.
The head will rock side to side slightly as it moves along, the movement for that is done but there are no pics.

EDIT- There will be a removable bottom panel so the wheel will only protrude slightly from the body, this will allow for future repairs/mods.
