Started a little side project today but only got about 45mins of shaping in, I have never attempted to power carve an animal before.

Really like the owl mate and after the line "There weren't any plans" I like it even more!.
Looking forward to seeing more of it as it comes together.
As for your first attempt at power carving, I'd be sticking with it!.
    Nice Work all round.

    Cheers
    Trev.

Cheers Trev, getting it to that stage was pretty easy, from that point onwards though it has become a bit more difficult.

Seems I have been roped in to making a dolphin for a girl who has had a rough few years health wise, I don't really like making things for other people as I am freaked out that they won't be right or may seperate in years to come.

I have no idea what timber to use but cedar is out as it will be too likely to chip at the fins when being carved, any ideas gents?

I assumed which woods are good for carving would be a sticky in the carving section but it's just links with no pics which is annoying but hey, that happens.

I have been lazy with the owl, I cracked a couple of ribs being an idiot so I have loads of spare time for sitting and carving stuff now.

Okay, so I remembered that I had a solid chunk of what I think is Bulegum which is still a bit green but I'll have a go at shaping it and bag it each day so it doesn't dry too quickly.

Plan is, make a ~8" dolphin and a wave that will be a money box and the dolphin's tail will fit in to the coin slot so the dolphin will hopefully look like it's jumping out of the wave.

Nice little colour change in the piece of timber.

Roughly shaped out, tail has to be thicker than scale as it will get some abuse and has to support the weight of the dolphin-

Baby dolphin is done, it's not perfect but it will be played with so it will be less perfect pretty soon.
Used a couple of wax finishes for the first time, did three base layers then a top but I may try to add a bit more.

Landing gear is done, was more difficult than expected.
The lower wing has a crack and started delaminating after I left it in the sun, whoops. The new one will be wider as it will look better, I was trying to keep the wings on the smaller side so it is easy to store but it looks silly and some planes have a wider wing at the bottom.

The prop is being lamined now, is about 14 layes of veneer.

Well, it would seem you have to turn your head, this site does strange things, I often have to use the full editor so I don't get jumbled words.

Of sorts I guess, it's just stacked veneer like the prop-

Sorted the mechanism today and it drops coins nicely, it looks pretty cool as a 20c piece starts rolling as you turn the beak.
Have to set the face tomorrow and wax around the face and it's done.

    R0247773.jpg

Sadly I broke the plane today so I had to cut the back end off and make a new one. I was pressing the rear wing in but I didn't clearance the hole correctly and went with a more force will sort it but instead it broke it.
The rear will be more simple as time is now precious, it is cypress top and bottom and there is a piece of.........something else in the middle that will be carved in to a wing.
