New toy motorbike design in progress
Design in progress - a new motorbike for batman. Started out as a bicycle.
Found a scroll saw pattern, basically a collection of patterns, no instructions on how the parts fit together.

Regarded this as a puzzle challenge. Cut out the parts with a scroll saw to see how it would fit together, and it got me to thinking. Can't seem to leave well enough alone, so made a few modifications.

Made from 3mm MDF backing board, hence the white colour. Needs a few more refinements, thinking of making a trike version as well. Handle bars are going to change as well - have a few ideas for that.Free toy plans from http://www.woodworkingdownunder.com/free_wooden_toy_plans.html

Phase 2 - Changed the handlebars to bat wing shape.

Phase 3 - changed the shape slightly to suit the length of batman's legs.

New wheel construction – the first prototype had only a disk. Trying out different shapes. This shape is a bit tight to cut on the scroll saw unless I change the blade. Made an array of five rather than six because six is one too many and four would not look quite right. The wheel hub is a bit small as well.Again using the sandwich method to create four identical shapes.

The idea here is to make the wheel at least 9mm thick, and to achieve this I have cut out a ring using a circle cutter that has been modified to cut wheels rather than holes.
The circle cutter I use has two cutters – to cut a ring, I set one cutter at the outer diameter and the other cutter at the inner diameter.
Note that the inside of the ring has a beveled edge. This is because the cutters have been modified to cut wheels.
The ring has a slightly smaller diameter for two reasons – one is to leave a groove in the middle. The other reason is because it's going to be a lot easier to leave a shadow line, so to speak, than it would to line up the ring with the outer wheel.
The spoke shapes cut out and the inner ring is glued in place.

Showing the parts cut out and ready for assembly. Note the red contrast trim for the middle piece.

Glued up and ready for painting, but batman insisted on a test ride first. Luckily there wasn't too much fuel in the tank, and he didn't get too far.

Back from the painting shop. Not sure if the black paint works that well, so I am going to try a single shade of grey.

New coat of paint from the world's worst painter. Manage to get more paint on myself. Two shades of grey. Think is works a little better. At least it's not as difficult to photograph.

Free at last - now you can download the scroll saw pattern and make one or a few yourself.
Here is the link: motorcycle scroll saw patterns fun easy to make project
Also made a plywood version. The seat was a bit wide, so I had to remove some material.
