How would you rate the noise factor of the H&F Scheppach bobbin sander. I posted a question on this matter today but not sure if you might see it. As you have one of these machines I would be interested in your comments.

Are they at the noisy end of power tools - say a router or cirular saw or towards the quieter end like a disc sander or pedestal drill? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry Mike, only just seen your post. The noise is nothing like a router or thicknesser , its very quiet, noise is not an issue with the bobbin sander. I've never even thought about the noise actually its really not a problem.

I use mine a lot for fine finishing - re: the finer spindles ... I found it invaluable when making this door handle. It is meant to have the look and feel of an 18th century European thumblatch .... pretty happy with it as a first attempt at metal working - all the rough work done with files, grinder and metal cutting blades in the jigsaw, but most of the internal stuff done with the help of my spindle sander and needle files. ... made doing the correct radius on the finger plates a snap too!

Thought that adding a couple of pics of the completed thing might help give it some context - I made this entrance for our home a few months ago. To explain: there was a house built in the 1850's on the site of our 1880 home. The early one burned down apparently, so I thought it'd be nice to recreate the 1850 cottage, using the 1990's rear extension that was on the place when we bought it. Basically, when you open the front door of the home, you look down the 30 foot hallway and see this "entrance" to the old cottage, as if the newer home was added on in the 1880's. This is the start of the transformation, which will include 14 inch skirting boards and all that stuff. I am waiting on a delivery of handmade glass from Germany for the doors - the other door opens into our laundry ... it was just a bit of fun - hope this makes sense to folks. BTW I got a quote for the two turned columns - $278 each. Being poor and a tight ar5e I couldn't bring myself to spending that so I made them out of some stuff I had lying around .... no prizes for guessing what they are made from

Thanks John, for the comment. That's the dealmaker. I will put it on my shopping list when next at H&F.

no worries .... just used my spindle sander again this arvo, to make a pair of bracket feet for a kitchen cabinet .... the thing sailed through the timber and produced a great radius in a minute or so.

G'day Folks, I'm a bit late on this thread, but thought you might like to see the sander I made with Mr Watson's guidance.

I used a Landcruiser windscreen wiper motor with linkage to make it oscillate.

Glad someone brought this back up. At the recent H&F sale 3 pallet loads were sold over the 3 days of the bobbin sander.....no I didn't buy one.

Lie the drill set up looks good.
