Thank you Bret and Bosox I am enjoying doing this W.I.P. as long as I remember to take photo's
Had a mishap today enlarging the headlight holes, whilst drilling them out the drill wandered and ended up with a elliptical hole.
I should have done this when the cab was in parts but forgot.
Which now means that I have three options
1 Start again on the cab (luckily it is not glued to the chassis)
2 Use the bandsaw and cut off the front panel
3 Make up a light cluster that covers the hole.
OK I am a coward so went for the easiest option which was number 3. As it turned out it was to my advantage in that the head lights can now be made from a light material which is in keeping with headlights, as to making them from a darker wood to contrast with the cab wood.
It is drying at the moment with clamps holding it so when the clamps come off later today I will post a photo
Just a quick edit to show what the front of the cab looks like now, I did not take any photo's of the damage.

Also managed to make some wheel arches which I saw on Pogo02 engine and liked, and also a ladder rest for the top of the cab just some thing I feel was missing

Wheel arches still need some more sanding

That is coming along really well!!
I like the way you have kept things simple and yet given the piece a lot of detail.

G'day Derek,
You could add a series of lines to the centre between the light to look like grill?
That being said it does look better than original as Bret said.
Cheers, crowie

Thanks guys
I wanted to add just that little bit more to the detail on the engine but at the same time make it a toy to be played with so no fine work as it would be broken.
Glad you all like the repairI was very lucky with it as could have been worse I should have thought about the holes earlier before glueing the cab together.
As for the grill idea Crowie I did think about routing five lines into the front to represent this as I have a router bit that is only 1.6mm but decided not to I may have a go at drawing them on will have to see.
Not much progress today as I am gluing up the cab, step and pump housing to the chassis and no one want to look at pictures of glue drying (you all could do that in your own shed) also sanded the wheel arches and making up some brackets for hoses will add photo's later as I have just come into the house for a cuppa and warm up

Well had time to take some photo's of today's work.
As I said before sanded the wheel arches using my drill press the great thing is at least the dust extraction works really well

The glue on the first three parts had dried enough to be able to mark out the wheel arch cut outs on the water tank and fit the wheel arch inner.
2013-01-11_15-31-06.jpg
The water tank glued up with the hoses and bracket fitted, It still needs to be glued to the chassis. Another little bit was to sand down the dials as I felt they stuck out to far

While some of the glue was drying I had a thought "what fire engine would not be complete without a fireman's axe".
This really was just a bit of fun mind you woodwork is all a bit of fun
2013-01-11_15-30-50.jpg2013-01-11_15-33-36.jpg
Tomorrow hope to glue the water tank in place and while that is drying start on the ladder assembly all those rungs. Luckily I have a box of dowelling with just about all the right sizes in diameter at least.

The fire trucks are still busy downunder....
G'Day Derek,
You're doing a fine job on the fire engine, good detail.
Thank you for all the WIP photos & build notes.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers, crowie
No work in the shed for me today with 40-45deg"c" expected across Sydney basin.

Did not do anything in the shed yesterday as not feeling to good. Felt better today only to be descended on by some of the family. Once they had gone managed to get a little (and I mean a Little) work done on the engine.
Got the 2 main beams cut for the ladder
2013-01-13_15-13-18.jpg
Also stuck the wheel arches on which turned out better than I thought they would
2013-01-13_15-13-48.jpg2013-01-13_15-13-56.jpg
I have a bit of the light bar ( top of the cab) left over I am thinking that if I cut a narrow strip of and then cut it in half through the centre white wood I could udse it for the tail light clusters,
your thoughts on this
2013-01-13_15-16-46.jpg
I always like to do dry fit every so often to see if the parts look right. STILL need to fit the cab roof and bits on top. So apart from that and the ladder assembly all the main sub sections are now glued to the chassis
2013-01-13_15-14-40.jpg
Well that's today's offerings more to come

That's looking very good Derek...
For my two bobs worth on the taillights question.....
Yes, your suggestion sounds okay to cut that leftover piece in half, it would tie it together;
But I'd also consider reducing the height to maybe half for a better balanced look.
Cheers, crowie

Thanks guys.
It is cold here today woke up to snow on the ground and finished in the shed with it raining.
They say it is going to freeze and then snow again so it will be like a skating ring if it does
I have now cut the light cluster so it now represent the brake lights, indicators and reversing lights. I covered the holes for the bumper buttons that they show in the plans the front holes I will insert dowelling as per the plans and they can represent fog/spot lights.
2013-01-14_15-25-02.jpg
Spent quite a bit of the time in the shed making a basic jig just to drill the hole spacing in the ladder sides. Then managed to drill all of them including the mounting hole.
2013-01-14_15-26-08.jpg
Tomorrow hopefully will cut all the rungs to length and glueing them in place

Well another day and more done.
First job was to cut all the rungs for the ladder and glue them in to the side runners.
2013-01-15_14-48-16.jpg
Cut all the pegs for the firemen to locate on and installed them using a block of wood with a hole in it so they all stand at the same height. Also glued the axe to the back of the cab.
2013-01-15_14-48-24.jpg2013-01-15_14-48-30.jpg2013-01-15_14-48-34.jpg
Another little job was to cut and install the front roof pillars and fit the steering wheel. Roof has still not been fitted but at least I can now give the cab interior a varnish now
2013-01-15_14-48-42.jpg2013-01-15_14-48-58.jpg
I just could not resist a quick dry fit of those item yet to still be fitted/glued
2013-01-15_14-49-36.jpg
Well that is today's work next job will be to think about some wheels, and all the pins for the ladder swivel and tilt also the wheels.
Another thing to make will be the firemen. all these will be done at the same time while I have the lathe running.
