You really didn't need to tidy up on our account!

Thats a great little tool. Very cute. For toy making I can see it being very handy.

I have one of these sanders I bought some 20 years back, they're also really handy for sharpening stuff, sort of like a Chinese miniature Robert Sorby Sharpening system! Not quite as rigid though ;-)

Great post seeing the toys you made Lappa! I bought the two books as well to make them for my kids in the 80's (ahem, cough, cough), sorta never got around to it, might be a job for my grand kids, if we ever have any that is!

These little machines sold on AliExpress are pretty cute...

Mini DIY Belt Sander Sanding Grinding Machine Abrasive Belts Grinder Polishing TUE88|Abrasive Tools| - AliExpress

They are very small, using 30x533 belts... but are priced reasonably @ ~aud$100 delivered.

The only problem I see with those ones is they usually have crappy little DC motors.

The older style narrow belt ones (usually around $100-$125) at least have a 1/8th to 1/4HP AC motor (and are quite robustly built), so it has a decent amount of grunt for the size, a puny little DC motor like that one above will handle like a bucket of bolts and likely stall pretty easily.

Crowie, yes. I've had my eye on one for a while. Never quite pulled the trigger though... 😀

    Aargh, absolutely agree with you.

The ads do nothing for the scale of the thing though. These are not big machines for mighty work., but cute toys for tiny jobs....

The belts are 15/25mm wide and 300 long. The entire machine is the size of one's outstretched hand.

    The motor is 100 watts, 24v @ 6A.

There are thousands of sellers of these types of machine on aliexpress.

Two others I've been vacillating over are one that runs on a self-supplied angle grinder, and another that uses a 250/300 watt motor. They aren't much more. The belts are 25/30 x 533....so the belts can be cut up from local belt sanding suppliers.

Crowie, are you happy with the Rikkon?

Price isn't a determination of what I'd consider, simply size. I'm in a... compact... unit now, so need equally compact gear 😀

PLUS it's would be good for little fiddly bits for toys!

I've only used it a little in the time I've had it but saying that it preforms okay and its dust ports works.....

Uncle Al also has one! Cheers, crowie

I also have one very similar to Peters sander but under a different brand name. I feel it is a must for model/toy making

    This is the sander Crowie and I have - Model 50-151: 1" x 30" Belt/ 5" Disc Sander - RIKON Power Tools
It is quite a solid little machine, runs very smoothly and is very quiet. I haven't used the disc sander very much, but the narrow belt is a real joy to use, especially into tight corners. The belts seem to last a very long time and are readily available from Bunnings etc.

If you are into making toys, this sander is a great addition to the workshop.
