Toys Vs Models
Hi Guys, I have been reading with interest some of the comments about toys and models. I havent really seen any real toys that you would be happy to let you kids play with in the yard after you have spent 6mths or more building. A lot have a lot of small parts which could easily break off etc and to me look more like models rather than tuff practical wooden toys.
If you want to try and make tuff practical wooden toys for kids which take 1 or 2 days to make I have found this site to be excellent. www.enjoymakingwoodentoys.com
You don't really need any fancy tools however I found a Band saw, belt sander and a good drill, battery screw driver and a frett saw pretty well covers most things however a router saves a lot of sanding.
Kids don't like sharp, harsh edges on toys so if you take the trouble to round the edges they are easier to handle and play with. Lots of places where kids can grab hold of the toy easily is important as they try to pick them up all sorts of ways.

Hi Prime mover.
I see you have made 100's of jigsaws and toys.Have you any photos of your toys.It may give some of the guys an idea or two.We try and help each other.
I am not into kids toys myself. It is just the way the site is set up so I post in the toy section.Big kids toys I call them.Little kids are not aloud to touch.Or some clumsy adults that I knowBack To Car Building & All The Sawdust.

Pics of toy loaders I am making (plus a bit more)
G'day guys. As requested here are some photos of toys that I am working on at the moment plus lots of wheels for trucks and an old custom pickup that I really should finish. The pieces for the articulated loaders are 19mm pine glued together and interlock easily with a 1/2in dowel to get the swivel action. The bits poking out are half inch timber and they will be the mudguards. The inside of the cabin has a seat, armrest and bucket lever control, the dash and steering wheel have yet to go in. The big pile of the bits is enough to finish 10 loaders. The Prime movers just need some wheels and then there done. They are just made out of pine and ply for the sides and stained with Feast and Watson proof tint and varnished. The Wheels are mainly made out of kwila and the centres are White Knight rust proof silver, spray chrome paint looks really good as well. I will put more photos up in the next few days as I progress.

Wow Mover ,you really are into trucks. You would need your own pine plantation to keep up with all the wood you go through LOL
So I gather you don't have much spare time for other hobbies.?
You do a great jobBack To Car Building & All The Sawdust.

g'day People, Some more photos of the loaders I made. Also some photos of the dump trucks to go with them. In answer to a couple of questions some of you had. Yes I intend to sell them. Yes I pretty much do this full time. And Dallasmartin the reason you made 12 and I made 10 is we are metric and your not.
I will put some pics of the dump trucks when I have finished them.
Also some pics of the prime movers I finished. I will make their trailers as I get orders for them.Last edited by Prime mover; 23rd January 2010 at 05:13 PM. Reason: Attachments did not come through
