Wheel cutter
If you make your own wheels, has anyone bought a unit like this for cutting wheels?
https://www.amazon.com/Wheel-Cutter-.../dp/B01M26Y3HQ
OR
Is it easier just to buy them ready made?

Carbitool make wheel cutters - You searched for wheel cutter - Carbitool
I have used all 3 sizes for toy making, they do a very good job on the right timber. They are for use in a drill press, hand held drilling won't work, and definitely not to be used in a router. Radiata Pine tends to tear, the best I have found to be Cypress Pine. It is important to use the correct thickness timber when using these cutters - 14mm for 40mm wheels, 15mm for 15mm wheels, and 18mm thick for 60mm wheels. Any variations to these thicknesses will result in mis-shapened wheels especially around the hub area, or extra work to remove the swarf on the outer diameter.
The wheels on this train are 50mm diameter.

Thanks Alan.
I had a look earlier at the Carbatec wheel cutters but the individual prices gave me a bit of a start, especially the total for a set, that’s why I looked at the one I posted the link for.
Think I’ll buy the wheels as I’m just looking to dip my toes into toy making, so to speak - just bought the “Animated Animal Toys” book

The other problem with the cutter in your link Lappa is that the maximum size is only 45mm and a number of smaller cutters which wouldn't be of much use to most people unless making quite small toys.
The other problem I see with the cutter is that the inserts appear to only be carbon steel which won't stay sharp for long compared to the Carbitool carbide insert.Dallas

G'Day Lappa,
I have both Carbitool Wheel Cutters
and
McJings Wheel Cutters
McJING Online Tools Products Search
I've found that hardwoods work best with the wheel cutters...
And here's a link to an old forum thread...
Carbatec Toy Wheel Cutters

I bought the Carbatec 40mm cutter and have just finished a batch of 60 Jarrah wheels that are 22mm thick. It wasn't much trouble to set the depth stop on my drill press, do a run through on both sides and then repeat the process with a 44mm hole saw. I leave about 2mm after the first hole saw run and, as I cut each wheel out, stop the drill and remove the wheel. It protrudes enough to be easily removed wuthout dismantling the hole saw and arbor. I have a short length of dowel that slips through the hole in the wheel and this enables me to hold it to my disc sander to trim off the last "dags" from the wheel while it spins. 60 wheels probably took me about an hour.
