    Default WIP Car garage

I have started a new project which is a commissioned one. It will become a toy car garagewhich should have the following: 3 stories high, pumping station and lift. It will not be painted, so no excessive use of screws etc.

I have added a showroom and a carwash to the plans, so there should be more than enough things to play with. Here is the first picture, with the showroom and liftshaft in place. The weird looking points sticking out of the showroom wall will go through the first floor, into the supporting columns of the 2nd floor. That way it will become sturdy and strong, without showing any form of screws or joints.

Any advice is offcourse welcome, I have a long way to go.

    G'Day "Pogo",
Another great toy for boys & girls to gain hours of fun.
What are the measurements of yours?
Is it your our plan or a bought plan?
Will you putty the screws and what finish are you planning?
    Keep the WIP photos coming.
    Cheers, crowie

The measurements of the base plate are 45x65 cm. The garage itself will not be that big, but the pumping station will stand in front of the showroom, so it takes extra space. It is my own plan, based on a study of other garages. I took what I liked and started to design from there. I will make a global plan for my own references, which I can share later.

Because the garage will not be painted I can not putty screws since they will show through the lacquer. I use screws through the base into the walls which you see, but the will not show. The rest of the joints should not be visible, so I will use either pen-hole joints with glue, ot very thin nails in unseen places.

Looks like the material you are using is plenty thick enough to use dadoes or half laps for most joints. They give plenty of glue surface and avoid the need for nails. Sometimes one must spend a bit of time to work in the dadoes and half laps so all the different pieces fit together correctly, like big puzzle sometimes.

Looks like it is going to be a nice project.

    stolzdm,
The material is thick enough, 18 mm to be exact. However, since these walls are positioned on the base I thought it would be easier en stronger to use screws through the base. Those will be out of sight, so no problem there. To add some strength the walls will be connected with each other use pin-hole joints.

Here are 2 new pictures. The first one from the same side, with the 2 floors in place. This shows the function of the dowels which were connected to the showroom wall. The slide into the columns between the first and second floor. The columns have a 5 mm dowel which sticks into the second floor for extra strength.
The second one shows the backside of the lift, the entrance of the showroom, and 2 paintrollers. I want to use these for the carwash to drive through. Not state of the art, but can be glued into place with a long piece of dowel, so the rollers can can turn en won't break easily.

Still curious, maybe it is just terminology based on language differences, but what are pin-hole joints?

Those are joints where I align and glue together the 2 pieces holes and a piece of dowel. I didn't know a better word for it, I hope you understand better now.

Thanks, that is a perfect description. I am not sure what to call it either, maybe doweling? but I think I like yours better.

Progress is slow but steady. Since I am not very experienced simple tasks take a long time to complete and the angles of the ramps and sides take some trial and error.

Anyway, the ramps are finished, almost all the sides are finished and cut on the required length. Still have to finish the elevator, doors to the showroom, carwash and pumping stations.

Made some progress today. The 4 brushes of the carwash are placed and the doors of the showroom are placed. The space above the doorse is necessary to be able to open the doors. If they are higher they will get stuck against the sides of the 2nd floor. The space will be filled.

    Thanks for al the encouragement.

The garage is almost finished now. Elevator is done, the road and parking stripes are applied, helicopter deck is attached, gasstation is done.

Tomorrow I leave for a midweek vacation, then back to finish the details and clearcoat it, it should be done just in time for the commissioner.
