Default WIP - Tricky Money Box

This toy will be a present for my 9 year old grand daughter, who told me last week that she likes counting money. This is not an original idea, just a modified and expanded version of one I saw on the net some time ago.
A coin is placed on a designated spot,on a rectangular box. Turning the handle, a hand appears, covers the coin, and snaos back in the box. To see how much you have, a drawer is opened, but, no coin in it ! Where did the money go ?
I started this by carving the hand. As to how the mechanicals will be done, no concrete idea yet. I have already promised this, so it must be kept !

    Thanks for looking,
    Gus

That is cool, how big is the hand? It may be quite the money box by the end!

You now have an extra hand for your build. The only place I have seen better looking spare hands is in prosthetic's.
Looking forward to the rest of the build.

It's big mate, eyes not sharp enough to carve small ones ! Across the palm 55mm wrist to first finger joint 80mm.
    Cheers

That is one nice piece of carving and to get it that smooth wow. Looking forward to the rest of the build and how you construct the mechanism.

    Default WIP - Mechanism Prototype

Using two gears, one with a number of teeth removed the mechanism does what I wanted. There is drawback though. Once the hand is retracted, the output gear doesn't finish at the exact same position each time, ie, isn't synchronised. What can be done about that, not sure yet, maybe a cam operating the hand is the answer, not gears.

    The basic mechanism
    Platform & Arms.jpgTop view.jpg
A cable attaches to the brass pivot, through the pulley below and winds around the output gear shaft. This pulls the hand out of the box. When the input gear reaches the section without teeth, a rubber strip pulls it down.

This video is of the top view,

    And from the side,

    Modification to the mechanicals methinks....
    Thanks for looking,

    Gus

Hand needs to stay down against the top when it retracts and not lift or it will leave the coin behind.

    Great work, keep it up

    Default WIP - Modified Mechanism

The short video is how the mechanism works using a cam, which works much better than yesterday's gears.

    Next, the drawer.

    Thanks for looking,
