Col,I have the first one. Once I worked on a few locks ,I started to make them to my own design, adapting the inner workings to suit the outside design I picked.
They are a lot of fun,til the house filles up with them- LOL

    Aussie.

Thanks for putting up the W.I.P. of lock making. Over the last week or so a new friend gave me access to a few books including the one about lock making.

I have thought about having a go at one for a while now but had to wait until ability matched the determination. I have nearly cleared the deck of some projects that have been time taking like repairing n old sixty year old rocking horse and working my way through by carving and turning a life size Toy wooden nutcracker soldier.

The W.I.P shown is fantastic and once i get my head around it may attempt one to see if they will be a good Christmas present. I think a home made lock attached to a nice jewelry box will be a really good present for my grown up girls. If not for Christmas maybe their birthdays.

I am always looking for ideas like what to make for my now five year old grandson, their comes a time when they become a bit old for wooden toys so I have to try to think up something different. I hate spending hours and hours and many dollars on a project only to find when finished that K mart or Aldi have a special on something similar for only a few dollars, it is really deflating and sort of devalues all your work and good intent.

For example, i would like to make some jewelry boxes but you can buy cheap Chinese ones so that to me deflates the work I would have done. I like the lock idea, now have to think about what to attach it too.

    G'Day "colbra",
I too got a similar recommendation from Amazon for a "Wooden Padlock Pattern" book.
Purchased too many "toy making books" for now so did pay it too much interest.
Thanks for showing it on the forum; I think it'd be fun to make but got too big a list of toys to do once I get back in the shed.
    Cheers, crowie

I really like this Lock Making thread. I have been clearing the deck of quite a few long term projects that have been getting me down.

Once I clear my head I might investigate how to incorporate a wooden lock with a wooden box made out of some special timbers.

The combination might be a good Christmas present for a family member. it is the lock that excites me because the downer of making wooden boxes is that you can buy a cheap Chinese one at a dollar store for not much more.

I hate making something that is undervalued by this cheap crap. I have seen some beautiful jewelry boxes in some stores that were very inexpensive but coated with that awful red stain. I think combination of a wooden lock and box with the lock being the center piece will make it just a bit different and maybe hold a higher value.

    ps

If any body can give some clues as to what else a wooden lock could go on that would be very helpful.

Maybe I have the geometry all wrong, but. . . . . it seems to me that the lock will be on edge to secure a lid to a box. I say that only because of the way the lock sits when I close up my garden shed. Somehow, the closure has to be set up so you get to see the beautiful face of the wooden lock.

I suggest that the hasp parts (the thingies on the box lid & body) need to be made also of wood. . . to match the lock. Thus the entire mechanism would set the work apart from that awful offshore crud. There's no life in that stuff.

The book "Making working wooden locks" is available as a free download. Here. Just type in the name of the book and a list of download links will appear. Click on the download link and then choose the free option for it to download. The file is a RAR file so you need to have a program that will open it (Winrar or something similar) when you download it to your computer.

    Default Locks wooden

Hi John thanks for that I have a digital copy of that book the one that's hard to obtain is making more wooden locks which is the second book that Tim had written why you can still get the first and not the second is a mystery to me.I am sure that there would be a lot of wood workers that would interested in down loading this book.

Maybe too many Brussel Sprouts or something.
I have no idea what you are talking about,so I have included another photo here for you.
There is a standard lock and set of keys in photo ,as well as the book. All for size
comparison. If I get your concern right, you think the locks are the same size as normal locks. Please let me know

Aussie, must be the lack of broccoli in my diet. I'm old enough to get to be stupid on occassion. Mouth is in motion, but brain is not in gear.

First, I do comprehend how large the locks are. I quite like that. That's enough to really show off the qualities of the woods.
Second, through or around what does the loop of the lock go? Another pair of wooden loops/hoops?
I'm thinking of a big fat lock to shut the doors on a wardrobe or a stand-up jewelry cabinet.

Maybe you could drill a pair of holes and lock the lips shut on a cane toad?
