    Default Canberra suppliers?

Greetings. I just moved down from Sydney to chilly Canberra.

Looking to see where the scene is, especially supplies. Seems its a bit tight for wood supplies down here. If its not house building materials then we are stuffed. (Bunnings is useless, devoid of anything but rubbish).

Thors hammer seems good. I am going to swing by at some stage to say hi and get some prices.

Anyone know other places? Wouldn't mind building a list for veneers, slabs, timber and stringing if they available. Finishings and glue would be nice (no local places it would seem)... Forced to buy off the Internet....

I make chairs, tables, boxes (inc puzzle boxes), decorative doors, some cabinet work. A few tear-down restorations too. Getting not the hyper fancy stuff now. I enjoy adding lots of details sing wood contrasts.... Good for the wow factor

(also a major FESTOOL nut, too)

    Welcome to the forum.

I am not able to assist with your specific questions on Canberra. I would suggest that you post this question to the general sub forum as more people frequent that part if the forum.

    Evanism,
these are the specialists in new timber around here (Canberra):
    Monaro Timber
    16-20 Kealman Road, Queanbeyan
    Phone: (02) 6280 6467

And you've already found the speciaist in old timber, Thors Hammer.

The local woodwork specialist equipment and supplies retailer is
    Fitch Sharpening and Tools
    18 Whyalla St, Fyshwick
    (02) 6280 9127

A few other general tools suppliers of course. So as not to favour, I'll just say look up yellow pages, most of them are in Fyshwick.

Veneers, well as you'd know from living in Sydney, Veneercraft in Padstow are just off the M5 and are probably the easiest to get to from Canberra.

Any metalworking tools, the one retailer you might overlook but is my personal favourite, is M&G Industrial. Friendly, will definitely talk tools to the small guys like us, but are basically hardcore industrial suppliers. Just going in there gets your bloke hormone levels up.

Turners in Collie Street Fyshwick are also a good source for furniture grade timber

    G'day & welcome Evanism..
As you've already seen, heaps of helpful & knowledgable blokes & ladies on the forum.
Make sure you put up some photos in your threads as everyone loves seeing others handiwork; especially WIP with notes.
Well done to local boys already helping out.
    Enjoy your woodwork.
    Enjoy the forum.
    cheers crowie

PS - Hope you're keeping warm in the Canberra winter
