    Default chainsaw ???s

    Gday every one been looking at this site for a few weeks thought Id join. I just scored a Stihl 076 from my dad as he is in his late 70s and its to heavy to operate lol . Been overhauling it , but come to a halt , can anybody tell me how to dismantle the clutch housing so I can replace 2 springs , its the triangular nut that has me stumped L/H or R/H thread also how to hold engine to loosen it ?? Many Thanks

    Hi and welcome to the forum. I can't' help you I'm afraid but hopefully someone will. You may get more advice and response if you post your question in one of the other sections of the forum, perhaps "small machinery" as not all the forumites visit this part of the forum. Go to the main page and check down the list of subjects covered in the forum and ask in one of the sections that will cover chain saws. Good luck with it.

    to get clutch off,

    get piston to bottom of stroke, take plug out and thread string into teh cylinder until its full this will stop the piston from moving far.

    you will need to make a spanner to get at that triangular nut, you will need to turn it clockwise and probably give it a good whacking, i had to use the impact gun on mine.

    sthil make a plug with the same thread as the spark plug it would have been in the original tool kit. It is made of plastic and is the right length to kold the piston while you undo and do up the nut.

    This is an example of the clutch removal tool made by member Martrix. It has a large nut welded on the other side - I made a similar one myself.


    As Carl said, a length of rope down the sparkplug hole will stop the crankshaft turning. Be careful that no loose fibres from the rope get left behind.

    However, I would advise against using an impact gun to take it off, there have been sufficient instances of people forgetting the thread is left handed resulting in snapped crankshafts. I suggest a large spanner. I use a 12" spanner on mine and it works OK.

    After all this the nut has to be torqued correctly back onto the shaft. To do this you will need access to a Torque wrench that allows you to set the torque on a left hand thread to 75 Nm (not all torque wrenches do this) - you could of course risk the crankshaft break and use an impact wrench.

    mate i made a tool to remove the clutch from my 076 just a bit of heavy wall pipe with 3 slots cut into it and a plate with a big nut on the other end so i could put a socket on it .
