    Default G´day from Canada

    G´day everyone

    I live in Saskatchewan/Canada and we are in the process to move to Western Australia.
    So,since I needed some info on housing (terms like "fibro/tile house" don´t exist here,for instance)I registered with the renovate forum.Now,I had an issue with my trailer sprung up and one of the members over there referred me to this forum.....so,here I am!

    G'Day & Welcome "G**" to a top forum,
    You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgable blokes & ladies on the forum all very willing to assist.
    You didn't mention your woodwork.
    Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyonr loves a photo, especially WIP photos with build notes.
    On your question about fibro & tile; I think it means fibro cladding & tile roof; sounds an older house similar to mine on the east coast.
    You'll find a stack of difference being a "canuck" to living in the west with the "sand groapers" [Aussie Nick name for West Aussie's].
    What & were are you moving to?
    Anyways, enjoy the forum.
    Enjoy your woodwork.
    Enjoy the west.
    Cheers, crowie

    Default Aussie Fibro houses, etc

    G'day, & welcome to the best Woodwork Forum,- can say this am as also on several other sites,in the USA & the UK, they are OK, but NOT as good as our Home-grown Aussie site !!

    I have a customer, & good friend who lives in Vibank SK/ Canada. Buys my Toy Plans from to make make when he retires.( He's a truckie )

    Aussie house terms,- have worked with a Builder in days gone past, ( when I was younger, and did dumber things, like clambering up timber framing without any safety gear !!! ).

    House types,- ( 1 ) Fibro-Asbestos,- Asbestos sheeting outside,- Fibro sheeting inside, with either tiled roofs, or Corragated-iron roofs. ( Asbestos sheeting is quite safe - providing it is NOT shaken, stirred, shattered, or busted-up so the fibers can go floating about. Asbestos went out of common House Construction use about 1970,-
    the modern varient is called, " Blueboard," similar in construction, but made with a mix of Cellose ( wood ) fibres, mixed with Cement, to produce a better quality sheet product, as Blueboard is heaps easier to nail, or screw into. ( Asbestos used to simply break away when being nailed or screwed close to the edges )
    Brick-veneer;- Single brick outer skin, then timber framing with Gyprock-lined interior.
    ( gyprock is made from Gypsum, and sandwiched between two layers of heavy cardboard ) Roofs can be either tiles, or corragated-iron, ( Colorbond, or Zincalume )
    Solid brick;- double layer of bricks, in the walls, with timber faming for the ceiling & roof. Ceilings lined with Gyprock. Roofs as above.
    Then there's also houses that are all Timber Walls, with tiled, or Corragated roofs;
    Houses made from Corragated-iron,- some are a good 150 years old and STILL standing;
    Original Aussie Pioneers homes made from locally selected Stone for the walls, using hand-made mortar made from locally burnt lime, complete with roughly-trimmed lintels made from local native timber, and imported, ( English ), Corragated-iron of about 20 guage,-
    My late Grandparents farmhouse down near Yorketown, SYP, was built as described above, ( cira 1856 ), and it is STILL standing, and STILL with the original roof !!!

    *** Here's a good Aussie Homes Site, that has heaps of properties for sale;-
    www.realestate.com.au lots of photos too,- Australia-wide. Might be useful for you too,

    'ave a good day, & happy woodworking,
    roger
