My name is Henryka. I am a freelance interior designer in Toronto, ON Canada.

I produce construction drawings for retail stores and restaurants for various design firms.

Part of the construction drawing set is the millwork drawings.

These drawings detail all the custom cabinetry, fixture and millwork for the project,

such a cash wraps, display fixtures, banquet seating, bars and so on.
Woodworking companies price these drawings.
The company who gets the job then builds from the drawings.

I have had the opportunity to work for woodworking companies in the past.
This helped me understand how to communicate the information in my millwork drawing details.

I’m not a woodworker although I’ve managed to build a frame or two and do a few
minor furniture repairs here and there.
I’ve had a couple of bookcases built for myself from drawings I did.

I am new here and find the information fascinating.
I’ll take some time to look around and hopefully will be able to add a few bits to the
Woodies Wiki about millwork drawings, etc.

I’ve contributed to ‘wikihow.com’ in the past and have my own site ‘About Building in Canada’.

I like woodwork and the smell of wood in a wood shop.

We all love it to work in our workshop, and love the smell of wood.

Hi Henryka, and a warm welcome. You could buy yourself a few basic tools from the local markets and get right into it.You will find the tradespeople you work with will give you a lot more respect and you will have a great time as well. You get to do the exersize of doing the drawings and then build from your own plans. My partner is an Architect who also does shop fitouts with cabinet drawings, although she does a fantastic job it would be great for her to actually do some woodwork with me to help her understand some of the subtleties of woodwork and cabinetwork. Some of the less obvious problems etc. ramble ramble. Can you post and show us any of your work??

Hello Hama and thank you.
Good advise.
I have some very basic tools. Hammer, saw, drill, nails, screws......
I recently had to take apart an old wardrobe so I could get down the staircase to the basement. Then I had to reassemble it more or less as a knock down version so that one day I can bring it back up. For me it was a slow process but very educational.
I greatly admire those that can work with wood and produce a beautiful peice whether it is a bowl or a cabinet.
I have a few drawings on my site under the heading Millwork and on that page under the heading Wood Joints.
I just found a page on maple in the Wiki that so far has not been filled in and I am working on an article to place there (unless someone beats me to it first).
