    Default G'Day Everyone

    Hey everyone,

Haven't done much constructive with wood since high school, but sparked my interest again while cleaning out my gran'mas garage - she was an avid truner and carver in her time, so has all sorts of goodies hidden away.

So having dug out some old Jarrah planks - 170 x 50mm x 1.6m (funnily enough these planks are ones i salvaged from a jobsite i was on - reclaimed, not stolen) I'm now tossing up what to do with them. Would probably make a great coffee table, but I just don't have the tools to make that happen, so will have a crack at making a box, using only hand tools and some creativity.

So i guess the first question is, what would people recommend as good tools to get a hold of to start me off?

Looking forward to peoples opinions, and keeping everyone posted on any progress I make.

    Rob

    Welcome to the forum.

Always good to salvage wood then to just dump it. You can create pieces just by hand tools, this is commonly known as the dark side.

I have a mixture of both and trying to use hand tools where I can.

Now by what I have read in your profile you might already have some hand tools it you are working on a jobsite? You might want to post a work in progress and ask questions along the way. Might be better to get specific answers to questions.

    Hey Christos,

Dark side it is then, might be more work, but will certainly be gentler on the back pocket I would imagine.

Sadly I was working as a roof plumber, so no tools that would be useful for woodworking unfortunately. So I'm pretty much starting from scratch.

Will get up some photo's as soon as I get a chance to start on some stuff.

    Ummhh...... Maybe.

This is an interesting topic you are broaching. I have found that some hand tools can be more expensive then the power tools.
