Welcome to the forum. If your doing woodworking as a hobby and u have patience, hand tools are a great starting point. There is a great online tv show called "the woodwrights shop" feat Roy Underhill, that would be of great help to you. The book "the new age traditional woodworker" is also great.

Here in Adelaide there is a group called "woodgroup sa". They have a shed in St Mary's near the big BP that is open for a couple of Saturdays a month. You can go there and use their tools and get heaps of advice, as most of the people there have a lifetime of experience. It's also a good way to work out which tools you need and don't need.

    Welcome to the forum.

The questions you have asked are quite diverse and have been covered in some threads. If you do a search you will be able to find them. You might also notice that there will quite a difference in people opinions, but that the nature of being human, we are all different.

As Johnredl has mention try looking for a club to get access to tools. This should give you some understanding on what tools you will want to purchase in the future. I might suggest that you start with a project and then determine the tools that you will need to complete that project.

Ask plenty of questions if you get stuck.

Thanks for the warm welcome and advise.

I hope that chisels are tools I will need as I brought a set of 6 berg chisels (I think they are berg/bacho ones with the plastic red handles) at a flea market on the weekend for $120. They looked in good condition (defiantly need sharpening) and have read that berg are great quality chisels. I will find a spot to post pictures of the chisels on the forum and see what others think and what to do with them. Let’s hope i didn't waste my money.

    cheers
    Kyle

    G'Day & Welcome Kyle.
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies and for the most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP photos with build notes.
    Enjoy the forum.
    Enjoy your woodwork.
    Cheers from crowie

PS - Don't forget to check out the garage sales or clearance sales for your tools
