I was a painter/decorator but had a couple of spills in 2005/6 I am now on crutches and working my way back to walking unaided.
I had set up a pretty good workshop before my accident as I was hoping to expand my business to include some woodwork.I built a 20x14 small shed in the back garden Christmas 2004, with a good range small tools and my main machine is a Felder combo(I love this machine).I,m lucky I have all this stuff now as I,m pretty broke not having worked since 2006.
I can only do an hour at a go and then have to rest but I have built some nice things mainly loudspeakers and my bench and some small pieces of furniture but I am pretty slow.
Anyway' sorry for the long post but I don,t get out much

Any chance to get rid of the crutches in the future.

I too have Irish ancestors but from 7 or so generations ago when they came here. I have no clue which counties they came from not that it would mean anything to me even if I found out. Even so, I am proud of having some Irish blood.

I hope your woodwork either helps you overcome your obstacles or makes them less painful.

Think I've got a bit of Irish in me as well. A convict or two.

Welcome to our humble forum. Sorry to hear about your spills. Hopefully we can fill in some of those "non woodworking" hours you seem to have now.

Welcome. I 've been in tough times , but if I do nothing and just sit around , usually It depress me more because I feel I've wasted my time. That's why beside pray time, I've made small cabinets & tables in those times. At least I can look at them now , and feel good because I use my time right. I'll post you some pics of them , Mark. hi mark, drogheda is a great town, i used to travel through there all the time, on my way to dublin, thats before they built the motorway, a few years ago now.

you are lucky you have your tools, i am sure you find it a great escape when you can spend time making cool projects.

i have been working as a carpenter for 18 years, served my apprenticeship in portadown, craigavon and belfast.

i lived in dungannon till i was 23, then moved out here, i have'nt looked back since, i love it here, its a great country, i just hope the work picks up a bit.
it is getting slow over here too.

i see another member called woodwould is from dungannon too, my god, the internet certainly makes the world a small place indeed. pleased to meet you woodwould, how long have you been in oz mate?

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum. I am originally from the UK but never got to Ireland unfortunately so I came to Australia instead.
I have a couple of friends who have some Irish in them, not sure but I think its Black label. Good stuff they reckon.

Wash your mouth out! That's Scottish swill. Bushmills is (was) my favourite (legal) Irish nectar.

This is a great place for advice, I've only just joined up myself, I have been drawn here for some time by Google searces that found what I was after here.
What happend in your spill?
I'm in mining now and it is very safety aware(when it suits, but on the whole pretty good) Having grown up on a farm I know all the dodgy ways. All I can say is don't take short cuts. Gloves( if appropriate) Glasses and Ear plugs. When I started in mining , having come from farming glasses were strange , hard to get used to. Persist. I havn't come across anything I can't do with glasses on, I'm a Surveyor and I've learnt even to look through the Jigger with them on. You only get two eyes. My wife is a Registered Nurse and the stories she tells me make me cringe. Even in this mining town , where I know everone has had the same training as me I see people mowing the lawn bare foot or with thongs on! or letting their kids do it dressed like that. I know every one of these men have been issued steel toe boots!
Think about what your doing or about to.
