    Default g'day mate

    G'day mate,
    my name is Barry and i am a retired French Polisher who has spent a life time working with wood. Got interested in wood work from my father who was a builder. My passion was restoring old furniture but now i am interested in wood burning and stumbled on this site looking for basswood as some wood burners from the U.S.A. claim it is the best for that art. Looks like i may be using Australian timbers instead .
    I have always enjoyed working with Australian cabinet timbers so will continue using them .If any wood worker wants to talk french polishing i am your man as i have spent over 50 years in that trade and even now am still dabbling in restoration of furniture .

    Welcome Barry,
    You could always write a blurb on how to do it, the do's and don'ts etc.
    You know we'll read it and have it put in the library.

    I've never tried it as I know nothing about it. But with a blurb would give it a try.

    The doors are wide open and so is the hand for a big shake

    I would have said the trade of French Polisher would be more of an art. This is a great place to find things out or even let others "pick your brains". I get annoyed with those TV DIY shows (I now turn onto some thing else when they come on) because they (To me anyway) don't do things properly and one example is I saw a bloke make a cupboard that went into a high traffic area in a house and the "finish" was 2 or 3 coats of shellac. My experience tells me that a proper French Polish finish is laying down a large number of layers to build a surface and that it is a little "fragile" and in the case I just mentioned a polyurethane would have been a better choice.

    I will look out for your additions to the Forum

    Welcome to the forum. There is a finishing sub-section in this site but please no need to spend all you time there. Ask questions as well as post comments after all we are a community or people that like to work with ours hands.
