Default G'day from not so sunny Sydney!

    Winter is coming...

Hi folks I've just started whittling and carving as a hobby, am a complete newbie so have been learning a lot from your posts and thought gosh, what nice folks I should probably join!

I'm just carving branches with Opinel knives at the moment to learn the ropes and keep all my fingers intact.

I think I'd like to carve out a stool at some point but my real need is wood and offcuts to practice on at the moment.

I went for a walk around the neighborhood looking for branches over the weekend, I think the trees were hiding their fallen twigs and branches from me...

Although I've only taken whittling up over the past week, I think I'm hooked! Hopefully I'm not the only one dreaming about wood supplies and what I'll carve next?

    Bye for now!

Its a quiet time for gardeners as we head into winter. Lots of green cuttings end up either mulched and/or in green waste bins these days rather than put out where you can get at them. Ditto entire trees - not even firewood, just a quick roar and they are wood chips. Most of the dry sticks I see dropped from native trees are too brittle for just about anything as they have weathered on the tree until so rotten they fall off.

I think you will need to wait for a decent storm, then head off to the leafier suburbs with a saw to harvest any fresh branches that have been ripped down, or ask the local power company where they are doing overhead work clearing branches from around power lines - for some reason they leave heaps of fresh, sound branches lying on the footpaths for days or weeks before condescending to clean up.

You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP photos with build notes.

    G'day wittlebug.

Welcome to the forum. I know to carvers in Sydney but there are heaps more. Look out for NZCarver on the forum. If you happen to be near campbelltown I know a guy there who would prob give you free advice and lessons. He has sold his works for thousands. One went for 20K. He is of shrilankian decent I think so his works feature his culture but much to learn from.

For timber you could try your local 'Jims' or the like if the do tree pruning etc. also approach a worker on your local city council / shire.

I'm having a get together for woodworkers in Feb next year. There may be a minibus coming down from Sydney. If your interested let me know. I'm hoping both the woodcarvers mentioned above will be there as well as many more wood carvers.

    Regards

    Dave
