G'day from Tasmania

G'day. I'm a 26 year old bloke from Sorell, Tasmania.
I left school at 13 to tail out in my old mans Mill, and have been in the bush ever since.
It was a dead rollered Breast Bench (scruff bench!!) and was powered by a 380 Ford Diesel truck motor.
We used to rip logs with Chainsaws if they were too big to be cut with a 42 inch saw in the bench.

Since then, I have built and used 3 Similar bench mills powred by both Perkins and BMC diesels.
Spent a few months working for the local Lucas Mill agent in 2009, and was impressed with them.

Built an Alaskan mill attachment for an 090 that I had and tried that. Backbreaking work.

Am looking at building a Swingblade mill similar to the lucas, but powered by the 090, so that I can do away with Gearbox, just need Lucas saw, and can make up a spindle from a truck axle shaft. A few Pulleys to get the gearing right and a few bearings, and a LOT of welding, and we should do it. Thats the plan anyway........

have also got a passion for old International trucks, and enjoy Driving the odd Skidder every now and then.

Does anyone have an 8 inch cut Lucas Mill saw that they would be willing to part with?
Or maybe even a mill??

Hi Mate and welcome on board. Regrettably I can't help you with what you are looking for but do I understand you correctly that you mill timber. I only ask in that I have some Huon Pine logs that need to be milled so that I can use the Huey in our place we are restoring at Pawleena.

If so can you perhaps send me a message (PM) and perhaps we can do something about that. Taking the 3 or 4 logs I have to a large mill simply isn't likely to be an option as I am sure they wouldn't be remotely interested. Dave

Just brought an 090 and 070 this morning from the local Stihl dealer. 090 has 25 inch oregon bar and is complete. 070 needs a few bits (Starter).

Spent a bit of time Milling Huon Pine into 30 and 40mm slabs today for another forum member. Was good fun. The old 090 Stihl and home made mill went well. Have never milled Huon Pine before and was raelly surprised at how soft it was even though it was dry.

Thanks to another forum member for letting me know that the Mill I had seen powered by an 090 was a Peterson Log Locust. Has anyone had any experience with them?

I have a Huon Pine lounge I built in Tassie back in the 70's. I am now restoring it for the second time. Unfortunatley I used a marine Varnish the first time restoration. What is the best for this timber. I am currently stripping it right back. It is used on a covered balcony in Qld.
