Lightbulb G'day from WA... A rank beginner. Willing to learn!

    Hi Woody friends,
I am 100% new to woodworking. I watched a class once, does that count as experience?

Anyhow, I bought a Dremel Series 201 in from ALCO Hardware 1980. Ticket price was $69 sale price $17. At that price I couldn't resist buying it. Never used it until this week when I did some freehand engraving in timber. The lettering was wobbly, so an hour ago I bought a Dremel Plunge Router to hopefully steady my moves. However my lovely old Dremel does not fit. My dremel has no screw thread at the neck and is not even able to drop through the opening. So I either have to write it off as an unwise decision (not checking the model number) or custom design a new fitting. ( I have no skills here, could be just dreaming)

Is it possible to drill out and remove part of the collar which includes the screw thread for a dozen Dremels, and then try to fasten my old Dremel into the newly made opening.

I don't really want to buy a newer model BUT sadly it may be the best alternative.
I look forward to your collective wisdom.

    Peace

    Hi Share All,

Yeah, I would class that as some experience !!

Welcome to a great Forum. If you are ever in need of advice, there are plenty of really good people willing to pass on their experiences as well.

All the Best and enjoy the journey

    Regards

    Keith

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "Share All".
There are a stack of members in Perth and surrounds plus the rest of the country...
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.
    Enjoy the forum.
    Enjoy your woodwork.....
    Cheers crowie

PS - I have a couple of Dremel tools for toymaking but may I suggest you ask the specific questions in either or both the General sub-section and the dremel sub-section as you will gain a wider audience and thus more likely to get more responses to the questions, cheers.....

    Welcome to the forum.

One thing you could try is using a stencil for the letters and try carving within the lines. Once you have done that you can sand the letters to blend into the wood a little. Might be a lot of work but the effect could be nice looking. Might even add a stain and sand the whole piece giving a more define letters or imagine for that matter.

If you like working with a dremel type tool you might want to keep your eye out for a pneumatic dye grinder. It's more of a metalworking tool but recently i've been using this on wood a lot with great succes. You can find them cheap used (off course you will also need compressor, preferably a big one or you will run out of juice soon). you can get some larger bits for it its great for speeding up rough work which I find just to slow with the dremel
