Default Hello - G'day - Greetings to all

Just joined the forum minutes ago and want to dive in. I have already gotten started on my first project - sort of - I have a set of plans for a Goat Island Skiff in the mail.

I just turned 70, am retired and loving every minute of it. I'm trying to rekindle a love for sailing that started in summer school at the University of Washinton in 1963. The GSI was such a beautiful boat just to look at and when I read what it can do was instantly in love.

I'm looking for members close enough to consult in person if possible as I have done little wood work but some work with epoxy and fiberglass. In particular, I need information about the availablity of suitable marine plywood that isn't the poor quality heavy Doublas Fir offered around here. The woods mentioned on this forum are species I have never heard of before and I don't know where to find them.

I'm in New London, Minnesota, USA and intend to sail locally and in the Hilton Head Island, SC area in January. That is of course after we advance far beyond the plans stage.

All advice gratefully appreciated. Cheers, bright sunshine and fair winds.

    Jerry

G'Day, Welcome "to the Great South Land" & to a top forum, Jerry.
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP photos with build notes.
    Enjoy the forum/sailing.
    Enjoy your woodwork/boat building.
Cheers from On Top DownUnder, crowie

Welcome to the forum. I think most of the members of this forum are from the southern hemisphere, but that should not prevent you from asking questions the internet does not have boundaries.

I might suggest that you ask your question about supply in this part of the forum.

    G'Day Jerry,
Just lately we haven't had as much as usual so it's in a bit short supply, only averaging mid 70's to low 80's deg"F"...should be up in the 90's for this time of year.....
    Keep warm.
    Cheers, crowie

PS - oops I just double checked New London and you are certainly in the colder part of the world and would laugh when I say I struggle with winter low temperatures of low 40's Deg"F".....

Looks quite reasonable to me Jerry. A swim in the nearest lake should wake you up

    Default Temps

I just spent the last month on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina where we had consistent temps in the 70 F. While we were gone they were getting -27 C at home. Summers are wonderful though and we have 10,000 lakes in this state including that great inland fresh water ocean called Lake Superior. It was while I was on Hilton Head that I began to see a GIS as indispensable for those waters.

    Hope to start lofting today.

    Cheers

    Jerry
